Poker and trading

K913K913 Member Posts: 5
Hi Guys,

Ive been a member of sky poker for years, however I tend to stay away from message boards and forums. I am also a full time trader on the foreign exchange market.

I was recently talking to a poker friend of mine about the similarities between trading and playing poker and I started to think that the lessons in risk management, ROI and probabilities that I learned through years of playing poker have probably contributed to my success as a forex trader.

I was just wondering if any of you guys trade forex and feel the same way?

It would be interesting to see if there are any other poker playing forex traders out there!

Matt

Hey Matt - this has crossed my mind: whether or not there are transferable skills from poker to trading and whether it's something I should be pursuing on the side. May look into it further - any idea where to start?

In fact, I bumped into a pal recently who told me he had being doing some sort of equity trading for the last couple of years and I thought, 'That's sort of what I do.' Part-time, at least.

    Hi SR23

Successful traders are people that are patient enough to analyse charts and look for repeating price patterns. At the end of the day, knowing where the markets will move is all down to probability, but the real key to success is strict risk management which is exactly the same as bankroll management.

I definitely have some ideas and routes into trading if there are people that want to learn.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I'd certainly be interesting in exploring it as a potential side-side income but don't really know where to start. If you could nudge me/others who might be interested towards some background reading/material for beginners that would be appreciated.

    Thanks again.

Take a look at Anna Coulling's books, they are brilliant, especially forex trading for beginners.

As with anything it takes a lot of research and reading. There are courses and stuff available which I would definitely recommend, its just important to know where to look because there are a lot of so called experts out there looking to make a profit out of novice traders, ever since the cryptocurrency boom, its everywhere you look

Great, will do - check out Anna Coulling, that is.

Rather busy until the end of the month but going to have a proper look at this in the spring, with a particular eye on (online?) courses. Perhaps I can drop you a PM nearer then for some advice? Thanks.

I've had a bit of interest in this subject so I have made a Facebook page called "Bulls, Bears and Snakes"

I'm gonna use this as a point of reference for poker players wanting to learn more about Forex trading. You should take a look.

I only trade in foreign currencies and gold, I don't do any stock trading whatsoever.

A company has to get to a certain size and undergo an IPO before you can easily trade their stocks. There are ways to trade small companies that are in their infancy but the spreads (commission you pay) are often so high that it becomes very risky and difficult to make any sort of short term gain from.
