Is poker Gambling?
Is poker a game of skill or luck?

The answer to the first question no matter how many times I have previously stated is it not has to be quite clearly yes, risking money for profit / loss = Gambling.

The second question however has an answer which is a lot more convoluted, Both answers are right. The Skill:Luck ratio depends entirely on what your opinion of it is.

For example, someone who puts time and effort to study and learn may say there is 25% luck involved, "its about knowing your opponents", "the strategies involved" and "getting your money in good".

Others just want to play "70% is luck", "any two cards could win","How does he always have Ace king when I go all in with Ace Ten & when I have Ace King he shows Pocket Queens the lucky so and so".

My answer if pressed on the second question would always be erring on circa 70% skill, so why why why do I play from the 70% luck side.

I often sit down with the best intention of playing one or two games, but five minutes later realise I have six games going that my auto registration fingers have started up.

These games would generally include any combination of;
No Limit Tournaments and satellites
PLO8 and PLO8 BH games
5p / 10p Spin Ups
Double or nothings.

Seriously how is skill ever going to come out on top here.

So, No more 6 tabling (well except in circumstances like the start of the challenge anyway, but otherwise….)
No more than 2 game types.
Max 4 Tables (except as above….)

I will endeavour to turn £10 into Dust £500 all tokens / tickets will be counted and I plan to incorporate promotions / freerolls (hopefully not the points freerolls)

Sub-challenges along the way and all my play will be directly related to this challenge.

The start finish values as detailed above are fairly inconsequential it could easily have been a £5 to £100 or £50 to £1000, The principle behind it is to prove a point one way or another fi only to myself but have decided to document this to help keep myself focused.

Challenge 1 - Bankroll Builder. Duration, Now up to and including 31st July.
I will allow myself the odd <=£2.20 tournament for my sanity providing I have £5.00 in my account after the buy in but this will be mainly focused on achieving the 25 daily points for the eliminator freerolls therefore will be mass tabling the £0.28 Double or nothing games
Not decided on bankroll management will probably steal someone else's criteria

Will need to get 25 games in before 8:15 for eliminator entry.

Best of luck with this, will follow with interest.

You've posted in the Betting Chat section but it will get many more views and attention if you nudge @Tikay10 to move it across to Poker Chat where it rightfully belongs :).

In Brazil poker is totally recognised as a game of skill. The law says it's 'a fun game that requires concentration, training and study.'

I think there are other countries too. Maybe even UK?

Following. As someone who also mixes all sorts of games despite knowing that it must have a detrimental effect on my win rate (using the term 'win rate' in its loosest possible term obviously), I shall be interested to see your progress.

Best of luck Mr Cool, I presume you prefer Mr Cool to Mr Um?

GOOD LUCK with this challenge Mr Coo1, I will follow with great interest........ WAWAW ;)
    .... though sometimes I wish we weren't.

At least your challenge will be easier than getting The OWLS into the Premiership. Roll on next Season and let's hope we don't get docked too many points :)

ok so this could be another flaw in my game. sitting about 150 / 194 in the rewards freeroll 184 paid, i pushed to a post flop bet. forgetting the context of my challenge which gives it as an obvious fold into the money, am i ever any good here.

Made a similar play in the eliminator freeroll to the one above. still not sure what is correct.
Taking it overall as a win, the 28p turbos are a must for a low stakes bankroll challenge as you need to be getting in the 100 points for the £2.30 token which is secured here pro rata. 6 tabling them is nothing short of frantic.

Good luck, shared a few tables with you recently, some crazy play in the 28p games eh?

    How's the challenge going?
  • coo1-umcoo1-um Member Posts: 2,947
All good challengers start with a downswing, thats what makes them more interesting.
Sill not playing optimally mainly due to six tabling the double or nothing, even when single tabling not really having time, but the equity in the eliminator freerolls still exceeds any losses so far.

Need to get out of the habit of playing the Freerolls like 'Freerolls" especially when 30 or so off the money. Playing the freerolls where i can but not reporting unless i cash. No need for the points freerolls yet.

Managed somehow to last till 12th in the eliminator freeroll, 28p games went better too had a streak of 15 wins. where 2 x 35 minute hectic sessions were played.

    Bankroll builder going ok.
