"I should have folded the ak?"

At what stage do you think you should have folded it?

I suppose we can get off the hand at various points, but very often we'd be winning there. For balance, we are not beating much, he could easily have K-J, A-Q, A-10, set of 6's, set of 4's.

It's one of those awkward spots imo, & many folks go busto there.

I do think not raising pre was a mistake. He still calls of course, but in the long term it's a better way to play A-K imo. We have a big hand, in the long-term we want to get some chips in the middle & try to win a decent pot.

I would not beat yourself up about it, it's so much easier when we are looking through the rear-view mirror.

Caveat; I quit NLH 15 years ago, I just play Omaha variants these days, so my advice is probably poo.

    Hi @Williams12

As Tikay said, we should be raising pre-flop with a hand like AK. Obviously the pocket 4s would have still called here, but by not raising pre you let the big blind see a free flop with any 2 cards and can therefore have a VERY wide range of hands.

As played, I would fold the turn. Once the villain puts in a massive check-raise, it screams of 2 pair and better. When you're in spots like this, you need to ask yourself what hands are they representing and what hands am I beating. Given the action pre-flop, the villain can have all combos of 2 pair (apart from AQ which should raise pre) and pocket 4s & 6s, so I don't think we beat much at all.
In these micro-games, people barely bluff so I usually just give big bets/raises like this one the respect they deserve, unless I have specific notes on my opponent.

By the river, we pretty much only beat a complete bluff.

No need to beat yourself up, just make a note on how the villain played the hand and move on to the next one
