    Pete,

In your original question, you didnt actually state what % of your bankroll you are currently risking.

Dohhh said that the 2-5% was correct according to then Pros.

He then said that as you have busted your roll perhaps you are not being cautious enough.

    Pretty straightforward imo

In Response to Re: bankroll : Err. because you say "yes" i am being too cautious and then "no" I'm not being cautious enough. So unless you have a split-personality disorder you contradicted yourself. Anyway, no worries, I think what I'm doing is correct so won't bother asking in future, cheers

Hi  Melopete, (cool name BTW!)  If you re-read Doh's reply he was answering the 2 x questions you posed..
     1. When poker "experts" say you should only risk 2-5% of your bankroll at any one time do they actually mean this?  Doh replied YES
And, 2. Am I doing things the right way or am i being a bit too cautious? He answered NO.

FWIW I think the 5% prob relates to the players who are "pro/semi-pro" and playing cash.  For the recreational player, like myself, I put in £25 and just play whatever takes my fancy in order to learn the game.

if u are losing £150 quickly u must have lost alot of £2 games or u are not sticking to your own rules.and if u get the hump by someones correct answer and then decide you are right anyway.i wouldnt even bother asking! if u want my opinion i would say 10% is way to much if u are a losing player. your bank roll will not last very long y not try 2% which would give u about 50 games for your money and u would be able to allow for the variance of winning and losing without going broke. try reading john connors post or someone elses it will give u a good idea on managing your bank roll etc.

Losing £150 twice over a period of 4 years doesn't seem too bad to me.  I wasn't getting the hump with DOHHHH, I just misinterpretted his answer as "yes i was being too cautious" at the start of his reply and "no, i wasn't being cautious enough" at the end. I now understand he meant "yes" to the percentages and "no" beacuse I said I had gone broke a couple of times. Apologies to DOHHHHH if I offended him with my subsequent replies. I am only a recreational player and usually use 2-5% which seems to be the consensus of opinion. Thankyou for the advice, I'll give JohnConnors Post a read. In summary, thankyou everyone who has given constructive advice and hopefully see you all on the low-limit tables soon. GL all

    emmmmm

    Yes & NO

    +!

    :D

The greater the percentage you play with the greater the risk - simples

2% is a very comfortable grind level, while 25% is very gamblers avenue - if you can afford to lose the whole lot then play with 100%

To answer the OP, I would play mtts up to 22 quid (the open)- but i would try to sat in obv, ....and cash up to 20/30nl I dont believe in any 5% rule btw, if you are recreational player, play with what u can afford to lose and have fun!!

As a recreational player I'd rather be playing with a bankroll and brm than with a budget and blowing money for a bit of fun every so often. I don't think I'd enjoy the game if I had to deposit regularly.

Play a bit, learn a bit, and try to step up a level as you win a bit. That's much more my idea of fun.
