"Kindness of strangers" is the headline in the i weekend, which describes the "huge network of volunteers" who have responded to the England star's plea to tackle child food poverty over half-term.

"Compassionate Brits stepped in where the government failed", says the Daily Star, while the Daily Mirror suggests the public has "shamed" Conservative MPs who voted against plans to extend free school meals through the holidays.

According to the Daily Mail, more than 350 traffic cameras have been repurposed - without consultation - to check whether pedestrians are social distancing in public places.

The paper says "large swathes of the country" are being monitored as part of a project backed by the Department for Transport.

Privacy campaigners accuse the company behind the technology - Vivacity Labs - of a "shocking disregard for transparency".

    'VAT hike'

The Daily Telegraph says the cost of disposable face masks is set to rise by a fifth from next week after the government decided to scrap a tax exemption on personal protective equipment (PPE).

The hotelier, Sir Rocco Forte, writing in the Mail on Sunday, calls for Boris Johnson to fire the Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, for presiding over what he says is the "shambolic handling" of the pandemic.

Mr Forte complains that "little or no thought has been given to the devastation all around us: the businesses that are failing, the jobs being destroyed and the suffering this will cause".

Don’t bother underlining anything, as I won’t bother replying to any more questions.
I’m not confused, but you apparently are.Although some might appear to be questions, but they’re not.

    Track and trace.
So it’s £12 Billion if you believe the figures.Id like to see some of this allocated money and donations to the WHO, and other organisations audited in the future. Following the money trail for vaccines if they ever arrive. Strange how Bill Gates is always grinning when he’s interviewed. Most odd.
So tracking and tracing involves mostly 8out of 10 with no symptoms, their contacts, and then contacts of them and so on. So you end up with hundreds of work isolating when they’re fighting fit. They have bills to pay etc.It sounds like a wonderful project for the economy. F..k tracking and tracing, testing is the wtg. How many of the highly publicised agriculture workers or factory staff have become ill or died. Newspaper s hite, move on that’s old news. Suited us then.
The death rate will likely be below 1% when all done and dusted. Covid 19 deaths this year lies 24th in most causes of death in the U.K. And that includes all the care home and elderly deaths.

'She should be given a well-earned break': Top Tory MP calls for Test and Trace boss to be axed

A top Tory MP and leading Boris Johnson ally is calling for Dido Harding, the beleaguered boss of NHS Test and Trace, to be axed.

Sir Bernard Jenkin, who chairs the powerful Liaison Committee of senior MPs, says Conservative peer Baroness Harding "should be given a well-earned break", adding that "the immediate priority is to fill the vacuum of leadership in Test and Trace".

His call comes just days after the prime minister and his chief scientific adviser publicly admitted for the first time that the system is not working effectively.

It also coincides with a new opinion poll suggesting the public's approval of the government's handling of the coronavirus crisis has hit its lowest-ever level.

The poll suggests that half of voters, 50%, now disapprove of the government's handling of the pandemic, while fewer than one in three
    , 29%, approve.

"Dido Harding, head of NHS Test and Trace, apparently says that she is struggling with what she inherited when arriving in the role, but during the summer, initial urgency subsided," Sir Bernard writes.

Claiming the public has lost confidence in Tests and Trace, Sir Bernard calls for a military commander to be put in charge and also accuses the government of raising false hope about a coronavirus vaccine.

"The challenge for the government is becoming one of public confidence," he writes. "Much incredible work is being done, but we are still a long way from the 'world-beating contact tracing system' promised in June.

Listing several failings of the system, Sir Bernard complains: "There is a spaghetti of command and control at the top, which is incapable of coherent analysis, assessment, planning and delivery.

He adds: "The immediate priority is to fill the vacuum of leadership in Test and Trace, which is destroying co-operation and compliance.

Oh and the mega rich hedge fund and bankers ( aka Tory donors) also don't have to quarantine now

    Times article today

People who are told to stay indoors because a household member has coronavirus will soon have to self-isolate for as little as seven days after widespread refusal to comply with the current 14-day period.

Separately, City dealmakers, hedge fund managers and company bosses flying into the UK will be exempt from the 14-day quarantine period under plans to “promote global Britain”.

The Times reports that the prime minister will make additional funding available to help the poorest families in England during the Christmas holidays, in what it calls a "partial climbdown" in the row about providing free school meals outside of term time.

It says Boris Johnson has sought the advice of the co-founder of the Leon restaurant chain - Henry Dimbleby - as ministers attempt to find a resolution.
The Guardian says the government is facing a growing revolt from its own MPs over the issue, with one telling the paper they have "never known so many Conservative MPs and council leaders so angry."

The Telegraph claims around 100 Tory MPs are exchanging "furious texts" about the government's handling of the matter.

The Daily Mirror's front page reveals that the England and Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford has been given a Pride of Britain award for spearheading the campaign.

Coronavirus vaccine rollout could mostly happen by next summer, Matt Hancock says

The "bulk" of the UK's coronavirus vaccine rollout could be finished by next summer, Matt Hancock claimed today.

The Health Secretary gave hope to those who are eyeing a return to normality after the long, dark winter by saying his "central expectation" is to be well under way by July.

But he dashed hopes that NHS staff could be vaccinated within weeks, despite the Sun reporting a London NHS trust is preparing to receive stocks of the AstraZeneca jab from next week.

The Mail on Sunday also reported the NHS is preparing for a vaccination programme before Christmas.

But no jab has yet been deemed safe and effective after completing trials.

Addressing the reports, Mr Hancock told the BBC: "We want to be ready in case everything goes perfectly but it's not my central expectation that we'll be doing that this year.

"The programme is progressing well, we're not there yet."

Boris Johnson warned Sadiq Khan is making ministers look like 'clowns'

Boris Johnson is facing calls to step in as Tories vent fury that the government is being made to look like 'clowns' by Sadiq Khan in the row over funding for London.

Mr Khan is demanding £4.9billion to cover the next 18 months after fare revenues went through the floor due to lockdown, and says Transport Secretary Grant Shapps is trying to attach conditions including stretching the £15 Congestion Charge Zone to the North and South Circular roads in 12 months' time.

But Tory MPs are increasingly livid that Mr Shapps is bungling the negotiations and allowing Mr Khan to put his side of the argument across to the public unchallenged.

London MPs have had two calls with Mr Shapps recently in which they read him the riot act over the situation.

But Mr Shapps and No10 transport chief Andrew Gilligan apparently pointed the finger at civil servants, saying they were leading the talks.

'Khan has completely outplayed us on this and Grant's team need to get a grip,' one senior Tory source told MailOnline.

A lot of colleagues feel like they've been lied to and all Grant and Gilligan do is blame civil servants.

'Many have gone on record denying Khan's claims and now look like clowns. It's beyond incompetent from Shapps.'

Mr Khan's team has warned TfL could effectively go bankrupt if funding is not provided soon.

In theory, it could only operate the Woolwich ferry and some school bus services.

Huffpost UK presents evidence of the Tory backlash. One former minister concludes the party is on the wrong side of the culture war Mr Johnson sought, while another MP complains they trusted ministers, who made fools of them and left them "desperately fighting the flak back in our constituencies".

The former science minister and policy chief George Freeman predicts the Conservatives will suffer "annihilation" in next year's local elections, unless they change tack.
According to the Telegraph, Mr Johnson is preparing to give councils extra money for holiday clubs to provide children with at least one free meal a day outside term time - a suggestion made by the government's food tsar, Henry Dimbleby.

The paper adds that the scheme could be combined with extra study time for pupils catching up after lockdown, "enabling ministers to argue it was a planned policy, rather than an about-turn".

Test and Trace 'is even worse than we think': Official figures are already dire, but experts say missing data means real situation could be more grave
Scientists led by University College London say Test and Trace is 'getting worse'
Researchers found some of the best available data was up to two weeks old, making it impossible to know whether official restrictions are effective, they say
'Data dashboard' shows rising number missed by test and trace within 24 hours

Britain's test and trace system is 'getting worse' and struggling to cope with the resurgence of coronavirus, according to experts.

Gaps in the data make it impossible to know whether official restrictions are reducing the spread of infection, say the researchers.

Scientists led by University College London say the gaps are starkly illustrated by their new 'data dashboard' Covid Red, which is designed to bring together all available virus information.

Six hundred thousand pupils are sent home due to coronavirus: Almost one in five children had to isolate last week... but just 10,000 tested positive for Covid-19

The alarming figures from the Department for Education show nearly a fifth of children were off on October 22.

"Don't do it Boris" is the headline in the Daily Mail. The paper claims a second shutdown would wreak "economic carnage" and devastate thousands of businesses.

The Daily Telegraph says senior Tories are continuing to urge the prime minister to "protect the economy" rather than follow Europe's lead.

But the i newspaper thinks a "change in strategy looms". Referring to the latest figures suggesting almost 100,000 are being infected each day, the paper says it is clear the virus is "picking up speed" - and pressure is mounting on Boris Johnson to take action.

The Financial Times agrees the "picture is darkening" for the UK as the surge in cases across Europe hits the financial markets.

A microbiologist, who advises the EU, tells the paper the increase in infections is "staggering" - and the whole of Europe is now "paying a high price" for relaxing restrictions too much over the summer.
