Liberal Democrats take Tory stronghold with historic win in Chesham and Amersham by-election
Boris Johnson's Tories suffered a humiliating by-election defeat as the Liberal Democrats scored a historic win in Chesham and Amersham.
Liberal Democrat Sarah Green is the country's newest MP after winning the seat, which had been a Conservative stronghold since its creation in 1974.
The Liberal Democrats won the parliamentary seat by overturning a majority of more than 16,000 in a constituency that had always been Tory.
The contest was triggered by the death of former Cabinet minister Dame Cheryl Gillan, who took the seat with a majority of 16,233 in the 2019 general election - some 55 per cent of the vote.
In a stunning result, Ms Green took 56.7 per cent of the vote to secure a majority of 8,028 over the second-placed Tories.
"This Conservative Party has taken people across the country for granted for far too long," Ms Green said.
The Green Party came third with 1,480 votes, with Labour trailing in fourth with just 622 votes, losing the party's deposit in the process.
The victory caught bookmakers off guard - the Tories were firm favourites and the Lib Dems closed at 4/1 with Ladbrokes.
"Fair to say this was a night for the punters," the firm said.

Those of us who abhor pretty much everything that Boris Johnson and his Vote Leave campaign chums have done to the Conservative Party have good cause to believe this is a significant moment in British politics. The great charlatan is finally being found out. The lovable rogue with the tussled hair and ill-fitting suits, who can barely string two words together as he tries to explain another Covid shambles to a lockdown-weary public, may reach parts of the electorate no other Conservative leader has before, but in so doing Johnson is now alienating huge swathes of the country.

The resounding Conservative defeat in last week’s byelection in Chesham and Amersham should ring alarm bells for Boris Johnson. There are many ways to dismiss this result as an anomaly: opposition to HS2 and planning reforms; a strong local campaign by the Liberal Democrats; a lacklustre Tory candidate. All of these were factors, but this huge swing against a government that won an overwhelming majority just 18 months ago – in one of its heartland seats – hints at the electoral consequences of substituting empty rhetoric and divisive culture wars for competent governance in a national crisis. It suggests that Johnson’s appeal may not be as universal as his backers believe.

In Stoke at the moment we currently have 11 building projects to deliver 1900 new homes by march 2022.
Except there are no plans to increase School capacity which is already running at well above national average for class sizes, no improvement to infrastructure such as road junctions, parking etc and no increase in the number of doctors surgeries, dentists, nursery places or even local amenities.
Oh and a final point, there are some 2000 properties currently standing empty or derelict within the City.
So where is the need ?
