Who won what, Sunday 1st August. Major & Minor miracles

Tikay10Tikay10 Member, Administrator, Moderator Posts: 158,810

Morning.

Quite brisk MTT traffic last night. Not spectacular, but some decent numbers, with, for example, the Mini Major hitting it's highest prize pool in seven weeks. Hopefully, we'll get through what's left of summer without too many further guarantee reductions. And it's already getting noticeable dark earlier in the evenings now.

In sport, we saw, for once, an exciting F1 GP. More of the same please, it gets a little tiresome when the same two drivers win every race.

A more interesting story, perhaps, is that of Laurel Hubbard. She is the first (openly) transgender athlete to compete in the Olympics. A decade or more ago, competing as a man, she won a bunch of weightlifting competitions. She then retired, & 4 or 5 years ago, began the journey of transition to female. (But without surgery). She now competes as a woman & takes part in the weightlifting today. It's easy to trivialise this (I hope you don't), but it's a very awkward & complex do. In an age where, thank God, diversity & inclusion is being addressed, she is forging a path. Fair play to her - but spare a thought for the other female contestants - what must they feel like if they lose to her? I don't know the answer to all this - of course I don't - but it's certainly something we need to think about. As the cliché goes - awkward.

This made it's highest prize pool for eleven weeks, & it was KLL-y who took the lion's share.

Runner-up was the curiously-aliased MrsParisxx. Wonder what the story is behind that alias?

What a podium this was. We all know we have to treat Sharky ratings with a pinch of salt, but the top three all have ratings of 90 or more; 96, 95 & 90 respectively. Whatever we may think about Sharky ratings, I'm guessing we are looking at three very handy players here.

Fine effort by Craig in 5th, too.

    £12,000 Sunday Major (£14,300)

    Never give up...

topdog55 won a £5.20 Sunday Major Quarter Final, advancing to the £24 Semi at 6pm. Early doors (blinds were 10/20) they picked up a gutshot draw with A-10, the money went in & he was up against the Aces of @MISTY4ME

The draw never got there & it looked like an early bath for topdog, as they were left with 200 or so chips. They clung in there & eventually, with just 10 seats on offer, finished...... 10th.

Judging by their average buy-in, topdog would never buy-in to a Sunday Major, but in the early hours of this morning they emerged with 1st place & some £4,004. Fairly sure that was a PB for topdog, & by a very long chalk. Perhaps I'm easily amused, but I think that's pretty neat

Sky Poker veteran NIHIGHGUN was a splendid 2nd, with Alvez sixth.

    £1,500 Mini Major (£1,990)

After the topdog story in the Major, here's another very odd one.

spearsy & hhammerhea finished 1st & 2nd in MML last week, & both used their tokens to enter last night's Mini - finishing 1st & 2nd. What are the chances of that? Delighted for both of them, & I imagine MML supremo @NOSTRI is not displeased either.

In third was beefmyster, to whom we shall return later.

Nobody will ever know how well @PKRPar did to finish 4th. Suffice to say, thanks to a lively lunch, he was undergoing some challenges in the bowel department during the final & had to occasionally sit out.

Just missing the final were Shrimpy & HAYSIE, not exactly two peas in a pod but they do have physical similarities.

Asho28, NOSTRI & thedazzman were all going well too before a variety of accidents & misfortunes befell them.

    £1,500 Reload Rebuy B/Hunter (£1,776)

Reload is seriously high-variance, so when cbefloyd ran 3rd in Reload on Thursday they maybe felt they'd missed their chance to win the thing. Not so, 1st place last night disproved that logic. Well done cbefloyd, you should be honoured.

The hottest player on the site right now must be beefmyster, who completed a hat-trick - 1st in Friday's MidEx, 1st in Saturday's MidEx & 1st in last night's Turbo. In fact two hat-tricks, a double treble if you like, as they made three FT's last night - 3rd in Mini, 5th in Turbo & 1st in Quicky. Running hot, or what?

Our Sunday Major winner has an ABI of around £7, & won through to it the hard way, via quarter & semi final satellites. Great to see £5.20 turned into £4,004.

This may be a repeat, but no matter, here's a special version of Lay Down Sally again.

The guitarist in the weird suit is Andy Fairweather Low, who was the founder of Amen Corner over 50 years ago. He's dropped the "Low" these days & has made a good living by touring with the likes of Roger Walters, Bill Wyman & of course Eric Clapton.

The lead drummer is Steve Gadd, perhaps the world's most pre-eminent blues drummer.

Then of course there is Clapton himself. Some line-up.

I couldn't guess which one of those Sheriff finalists wasn't 90+, they are all very good. I pay for sharky, and barely ever use it other than to check my own results. It is pretty good generally for letting you know where the competition is toughest. I think the ratings are fairly meaningless, I am 70 odd losing on Stars, and have both a shark and fishbowl on another site that forces name changes.

I can't get too excited about the weightlifting, it is the sport with the highest proportion of cheats and no way she wins anyway. I think it is a difficult question, but the correct answer in situations like this is to see what Lozza Fox thinks and think the opposite. Probably.

    Ahh, Laurence Fox.

What an odious pillock he is. He must have some redeeming features, but God knows what they are.

A surprising (well, to me) piece of trivia on Laurence Fox - he was married to Billie Piper or the better part of a decade, though they are now divorced.

AS we got near the end of that 6K bounty hunter the pressure on me must have been huge. I was playing really strong aggressive most the way but at the end the chip value was just too much.

I am extremely proud of my overall game yesterday, I had a much better selection of which MTTs I was gonna stream.

I should have realised one was blocked (curiosity got the better of me) and one other has won way more than the rest so shouldn't be too worried he isn't 90+. Profit is a more reliable arbiter, probably.

The Billie Piper thing us weird, she seems reasonably normal (for an actress). Think Lozza is just going through a public mid life crisis, but you associate with extremists, you become more extreme. Happens on both sides of the debate, and you end up slagging others who aren't extreme enough on your own side.

Well done @craigcu12 too, obv. didn't want you winning, but always depends a lot on cards that deep.

    @Doooobs

Returning to our female weight-lifter friend, yes, I suppose weight-lifting is no big deal, but very soon it will be across many other more day-to-day sports, especially in athletics, swimming & the like.

It's a very awkward thing indeed, balancing the desire for diversity/inclusiveness & so on
with the views of the other competitors.

  • MAXALLYMAXALLY Member Posts: 17,483
....talking of 'inclusiveness' , it is very refreshing to see a micro player satellite into the Main and take it down. I have said for years that the sat tree needs looking at by Sky Poker to accommodate the grass root/smaller BR players. Then again, the software doesn't allow a player to open the lobby in game, so that possibly is a conversation for 2030. ;)
