    My father was a bookmaker.

In 1970 a regular punter who mostly bet on favourites put the keys to his new car, an Austin Maxi, on the counter and asked my Dad to take the bet £800 to £100 on the 1/8 favourite over the sticks.

My Dad said " ....... you are an insurance agent and you need your car for your work. Put £800 on the counter and I will gladly take your bet. However I won't let you jeopardise your livelihood and your families future"

He didn't take the bet and gave him back his keys.

The horse (1/8 fav) fell at the second fence.

Not all bookies are dishonest or uncaring.

William Hill flew me to Glasgow, put me and my wife up in a hotel for two nights including a coach to, and hospitality at, the Ayr Gold Cup.

I did work for them at the time though.
