‘The NHS with guns’. We can fix the money-pit Ministry of Defence by buying American
https://youtu.be/6gjZ86UgTPcLast week the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer acknowledged that Britain needs to spend more on defence. If this seems an odd thing to say just a few weeks after a Budget that barely mentioned defence, it does at least make clear where the blockage is.
The obviousness of the requirement is, slowly, finally, making Defence a votable issue. It shouldn’t take a terrible threat to force more money out of the Treasury but that is the reality. However, spending must be immediately followed by an acknowledgement that money alone is not the only solution. Money must also be spent better. There is a risk that the Ministry of Defence becomes a bottomless pit – the NHS with guns.

Military assistance to Ukraine since the Russian invasion.
The UK is one of the leading donors to Ukraine, alongside the US and Germany. The UK has pledged almost £12 billion in overall support to Ukraine since February 2022, of which £7.1 billion is for military assistance. £2.3 billion was provided in each of the financial years 2022/23 and 2023/24 and on 12 January 2024, the Government announced a further £2.5 billion of funding for 2024/25.
The UK is providing both lethal and non-lethal weaponry, including tanks, air defence systems and long-range precision strike missiles. While the UK has committed to training Ukrainian fast jet pilots, combat fighter aircraft will not be provided.
The UK is also hosting a training programme (Operation Interflex), which is supported by several allies. Over 30,000 Ukrainian personnel have been trained so far, with the aim of training a further 10,000 by mid-2024.

So if I'm reading this right, the government says we need to spend more money on defence whilst contributing a £12billion package to Ukraine since 2022 ?
Can find money for endless wars instead helping the citizens of this country.
I'm sure taxpayers would rather see their money spent here.
There are other issues like mental health.
I believe that responsibility currently lies with Local Councils.
So maybe a solution would be to increase our Council Tax by say 50%, and put them all up in hotels.
Although that is unlikely to be popular.
If no other country had offered assistance to Ukraine, then the war with Russia would have been over long ago.
Ukraine would have lost.
