Dealers Choice

Something Ive been wondering for a while,  I had forgotten to ask but a post by Tikay has jogged my memory.

When dealers choice games are put on by a casino, whats the setup?

For instance, there must be loads of card games that have been invented.  Does the dealer have the choice of just a select few games or can he choose anything.  If so what if no one has heard of it or knows how to play it.  What if he made it up or is making it up as he goes along.

Also, when the dealer chooses the game, is it that game for just that hand or does it do an orbit or something then it is the next persons turn to choose.

Also, in the casinos Ive been to, this dealers choice game always has a higher blind/stakes than the nl100/200 games of holdem.  Is this pretty consistent with most casinos?

 thanks

From what i've seen in the Luton casino the button is basically a massive keyring type thing with all the games on there and whoever is on the button chooses the game they want & displays that.  There are 10 (hold em, PLO, PLO8, stud8, super stud, irish, pineapple, paduki, lowball, draw)  I think if you don't know how to play it then its tough boobies, or ask the others at the table.  It just the game for that hand and it tends that DC tables are higher limits!

    Hope this helps

    Hi OMahoney.

OK, one at a time. The Dealer in "Dealers Choice" is the person with the Button. In fact, there is a real Dealer, supplied by the Venue, of course, but nominally, as in ALL poker, the "dealer" is deemed to be the player on the button.

    What games are included?

Wel, Dealers Choice is what it says on the tin, but only up to a point. The Dealer - player on the Button - gets to choose the game. But that choice is ONLY from a handful of nominated games.

DC (Dealers Choice) in most Venues includes 4 or 5 ONLY of the following.....

    4 card Omaha High

Omaha High Low (4m, 5 or 6 card). If there are too many players for 6 card, the player/dealer will say "Omaha Hi-Low, maximum", meaning "as many cards as possible". Because you cannot play a 6 card on an 8 handed Table, for example, as there are not enough cards in the deck.

    Stud

    Irish (3, 4 or 5 card)

    Paduki

    Super-Stud

    Hi-Lo Stud

    Lowball

Hold Em - though it's very rarely selected in DC circles.

....& sometimes a local speciality - for instance, in Sheffield & Blackpool they play a lot of Pineapple.

You can ONLY select a nominated game, because the Dealer (the REAL Dealer) needs to be able to deal it properly, & impose the House Rules, which the Supervisor will know, so that the game can be properly regulated & run. Bear in mind that DC games get big - VERY big, so there need to be clear Rules & unambigious games.

The Blinds - again, it varies from venue to venue, but are either "off the Button" (as in normal poker, the SB & BB sit BEHIND the button) or ON the BNutton, in which case the two Blinds are the Button, & the Seat immediately to the left of the button. There is NO small Blind in DC, just "two bigs". The Button is a MASSIVE advantage in most DC games.

Sometimes, a straddle, Live Straddle, or Missisippi straddle are permitted.

The nominated game is played ONCE only - one hand - & then the Butonm moves, & the next player now decides what the game will be.

The game of DC has THE most brutal variance of any form of poker, bar none. No matter how conservatively you may wish to try to play, your entire stack will be in the middle quite frequently.

Games like Super-Stud also have SEVEN betting rounds, so you can see how the pots get so big.

All DC is Pot-Limit, No Limit DC is NEVER played.

Sounds Awful - Aside from the fact that I only know two of the games mentioned above, I think I would go broke very quickly lol.

You are a variety of knowledge Tikay but I think I best stick to Hold-em & Oh-Maha.

    Table Charges.

Some Venues charge rake (capped) but as there are rarely more than 10 hands per hour (split pot games & Super Stud take a long time for each hand) it's a loser for the Venue.

Other Venues - G-Luton for example - charge each player £10 per hour to play DC.

If you play DC & there is a variant you do not want to play, you can just "sit out" for that hand. I always sit out for the Hold-Em & Irish variants.
