No I wouldn't call the 480.  Once he calls your turn bet he is never ever ever folding river.

But then again I would play far better PF.

EDIT:  Also the DYM format is such that you really have no need to play any hand like this, your goal in a DYM is to get to 4000 chips.  It is not to get involved in pointless pots the first hand.

agreed scotty, normally i will only play aq and above for first 4 levels or so, i just think my poker as been really sloppy tonight and i am defo donking chips away, in my last 2 DYM i have got low very early and then put my thinking cap on and ended up doubling up in both, i am getting the results tonight but i also know i am not playing my best poker

fold preflop and you avoid tricky situations like this.

also dont limp, if you're gona play j8s you only want to do it from the CO/Btn to steal

Nothing wrong with a cheap look early doors, but I find if I dont hit the flop in a massive way then I get out the way fast.

Early levels, I find top pair next to useless as you usually get so many weak calls.

You know yourself that it was not played well. The important thing from the hand is all the information you received from it. The other player involved in the pot showed himself to be very loose. A board with a 1 card straight on and he is prepared to go that deep into it with 2nd pair and a bad kicker. You should take note of that sort of play because that is who will donate chips to everybody, and also can not be bluffed off a pot.So if you made a note of that and then tightened your game up then you know you will get those chips back with interest later. Sometimes paying the river off when you know you are losing can be a good thing.

The preflop play could be described as speculative I reckon. It's not terrible, but with most things which are speculative we're not *expecting* to make a profit but if we do then it will be a bumper pay day. It's why we go set-mining with small pairs or hope to flop a straight with that cute looking 6c-5c, right?

OK, so with that aside, why do you not just fold the flop? Yes he's min-raising us for just 40 more, yadda yadda, but that flop is way too textured for our hand. We didn't flop a monster, we flopped a bit of it. Just pass, preserve those valuable chips and move on - as Scotty rightly says, we're aiming to get to 4,000 so we'll be needing as many of the chips in the stack as possible to make the double-up all the sweeter.

Agree with Dave on this. You are speculating for a monster. If you don't hit it, let it go. There will be other times where you can use your saved chips to greater effect.
