which posts are first to be seen?

hi, what determines which posts come first on the forums, i thought it was the last ones written are the first shown.(the 1st page on the forums), but randon discussions keep popping up from ages ago, any know how it works?

    if someone is browsing the older topics and replies to it, it will be brought back onto page 1 at the top and will stay there till someone replies to another topic where it will be replaced  and so on etc etc
