Mexican waves at the World Cup
Why are they going anti-clockwise?
Is it because they're in the Southern Hemisphere and the water goes down the plug hole that way as apposed to clockwise in the North?

thats a myth based on the coriolis effect which does affect large roatating systems such a tropical storms. water in a bath tub does not suffer from it. essentially the earth is moving much faster at the equater than at the poles. over large distances this difference causes the system to rotate with the equator at the equator side casusing clockwise spin in the north and conter-clock wise in the south hemispheres. in a bath tub the difference in distance from the equator between the top and bottom of the system is negliagable hence no effect.
it's beem studied using large vats of water left to stand in vibration free enviroments with a tiny plug hole that can be released without affecting the body of water.
the myth holds, though. and weather sytems do observe to coriolis effect, so maybe the myth being believed has some baring on what way a crowd "thinks" a wave should go.
I did notice it too..
....but also that at some matches the waves did go the other way as well!!
