Tipping in Live poker....

At the risk or recreating the scene from Reservoir Dogs (or Carlo vs Channing)...

What is people's view on tipping live games?

What's the norm? A percentage?

Is there a max? (what if you won £10m in WSOP?)

In MTTs, it it just the winner?

In cash games is it just in big pots?


Who's Mr Pink? :)

    Tipping is an American practice that is unfortunately becoming an expected practice within several spheres in the UK.

    Don't do it because you think you ought to, or too routinely.

    Save it for service over and above the expected level.

        Probally a silly question but how would you tip a Dealer at a Live Venue ? for instance would i just hand a chip to them

    I don't tip the dealers. I save my money for the waitress' in the short shorts.

    Seriously though, I don't tip, you already have to pay rake and the dealers get wages. If maybe at the end of a session I've made a fair bit and the dealer has been really friendly and chatted a lot then I will, but not after every pot you win, it's just ludicrous and massive -EV

    In the majority of caino's ive played in if you tip the dealer that doesnt go to that dealer all tips are saved up and split between all the members of the staff.

    So if i tip one dealer £10 then they propably get like 86p so because of this ive just stopped tipping.

    I generally don't agree with tipping in life, like someone said above people are paid a wage. I did however used to work in a restaurant and obviously used to love tips! I very rarely play cash but once at DTD I trebled up on a cash table with QQ and did give the dealer a few quid, mainly just because I thought it was expected. I find with some dealers where I have railed tables that they just expect it and you get nothing more than a quick 'thanks' or 'thank you'.

    As a rule i do not tip dealers... Do they give you any money back if you lose a big pot?? No.. So why should we give some back if we win some?? We pay thier wage by giving rake to the casino....each to thier own tho, i can see why people do tip and sometimes i do, if im in a good mood after a good session, but thats not very often!!

    I always tip.
    Used to be that pretty much everyone tipped but it has certainly become less of the norm these days.

    Twas a perfect response imo.
    They get paid a wage to provide solid service, it's their job Tipping otherwise is just illogical (i.e. after winning a pot b/c it's considered good karma or some bs). I'd tip a dealer if they're friendly, get the table talking and/or provide excellent service (which also promotes other dealers to do the same). If the dealer is inexperienced or clumsy but appears genuinely apologetic I won't mind, but a grumpy/aggressive dealer along with bad service would result in me talking to staff about it, if the dealer doesn't acknowledge any wrongdoing.

    Never played poker properly at a casino though, so what do I know!

    Depends where I play.  If I am playing at a casino in popmey or southampton do not normally tip unless I bink the turney as the tips are pooled and shared at the end of the month between all staff - as far as i am aware.  So in effect your tip is not really going to the dealer/ dealer that has dealt for you.

    At my local club I always tip because I know this makes up a big part of their wages.  Also you know that when you tip the person you give it to is the person who will directly benefit.  Normally 5% which ever place I finish in a turney.  For cash tipping is a must as the dealers only deal for for tips - not basic wage.  Again I try and stick to general rule of 5%.

    I have never played live - yet. However, when they knock the rake on the head then maybe i will give a tip at the end of the session. Until then they can go and ........ well, you get the jist.

    Hi all,

    Was out in vegas last year and was also unsure about the tipping procedure. I was lucky enough to finish 2nd in a small poker tournament. When it finished the guy came over with our money massive $98 for myself and $122 for the winner he then asked if we would like to tip the dealers. Weren't sure of the protocol so gave $8 more to keep it round to $90 was this guy just being amerivan but tipped but the winner tipped jus $2. Is there any sort of guideline when it comes to tipping in casinos or vegas?
