would a C/R have been better against a LAG

all the way through this villian (x) was so LAG his bets could be anything.
with me already doing a raise preflop he probably knew that i had a very short hand range. so with me now hitting my set i went for a bet with the flush draw possible. but disappointly he folded his hand. which left me wondering it would have been better to check and allow him to bet the flop first then i ship my stack.?

If you're gonna check then it's got to be to check/call imo, especially against a LAG (although there aren't many (any) of them at 4NL, not good ones anyway).

We're checking to disguise our hand, c/r just tells him we have an absolute monster after 3betting pre.

I prefer just bet bet bet. If you go with check, then it's to check/call imo
