He's probably not going to give you too much credit for a 9, so I wouldn't worry about not being called by worse. That said, I doubt he calls often with just top-pair or worse, so no reason to bet too small.
I'd probably bet a little less than 3/4 pot. I wouldn't want to bet too big so that I couldn't be called by the lower two-pair hands.
Also, your thread title made me think you'd been taking advice from Orford: "4-card straight".
