DYMs are killing poker and should be banned - Discuss...

Hopefully that will get some attention!

Must start off by saying I am not seriously suggesting banning DYMs.

However are they really good for the game?

Beginners are often encouraged to start off with them because they are low variance. True.

However they are also high rake - unfairly high imo (20%) at the lowest levels where beginners should be starting. Hard enough for a good player to beat that - beginners have no chance.

They also don't really help new players learn much about poker, unless they are so new getting used to betting and hand rankings is important.

Even the successful grinders at DYMs don't seem to enjoy them.

What happened to the good old fashioned better structured 6max's. Why is volume so low? If you are good you can win more - if you are learning you can learn more and you actually have to play to win - not hang on in there. What's not good about that?

Tikay in another thread commented that DYMs would make dull TV - so True - bring back the play the presenter 6 max's. Put 6max's on TV. Create some interest please! 6max are fun - playing to win is fun - playing with a structure where you can still have a 20 min HU battle is brilliant.

PS I should declare a minor conflict of interest if you can spot the difference between my ROIs in DYMs and 6max.

They're also well known to be wide open to the possibility of collusion

    All good points, especially Lambert's.

The play-to-a-winner sng's are dead because PokerStars exists. That's the bottom line on that.

    Old chestnut.

Not disagreeing with you Paul. Obviously collusion in a Dym us far easier than in other variants.
However, I can count on the fingers of one hand the amount of times I've been suspicious.
I've played nearly 8000 games now and don't think it's an issue at all.

It's probably less so on here and potentially easier to catch out with a smaller player base but I bet it was rife on sites like Stars which is I assume why they made the decision to completely drop them from the site.

Atm it's hard for Sky to compete. You probably know best cos you've played a fair few but I imagine you reg on Sky and wait 5-10 mins for a game to fill... on stars it's prob closer to 5-10 seconds. Most people don't wanna wait 5-10 mins for a game.

BUT having said that... that's the current state but it's not gonna get any better by just ignoring it.

The only thing they have to do is lower the rake,as for collusion that can happen on most formats of poker, ive played over 30 thousand dyms wow and ive seen collusion 3 times, also collution is done for many reasons and tbh u gotta be pretty dumb to do it on a dym coz it stands out like a sore thumb.

So are we really saying that DYMs are particularly popular because you can't play them on Stars?

Yes I can wait a few mins for a game - but if I'm only playing 1 or 3 in an evening I'm fine with that.

Obviously if I was grinding and playing off peak Sky times I would have to look elsewhere for action but that's another question entirely.

Its all about choice imo and these are an extra choice

The more variants of the game the better imho
