On a night when Brazil's darren bent was booed off the pitch, germany's darren bent was exalted and rewarded with a bit of world cup history. Moral of the story: its ok being a lumbering addendum to a side if the side create chances for you (you know how keepers are left out of formational notation like 442 41231 etc? Well bent, fred et al need similarly excluding. If you have a darren bent type player you are playing a 441 formation for all they add to the team.)

Remember that clip of an african player charging out of a defensive wall and clearing the ball before a free kick had been taken. It was a visual joke summing up the standard and general understanding of non-euoro / south american football. That doesnt hold true now.Getting to the world cup semi final should have been seen as a huge achievement in today's football climate. No whipping boys, no teams are tactically naive, even teams like algeria and costa rica are well coached and set up. As is they'll be seen as an embarrassment.  And are the tactically naive whipping boys at their own world cup.

Neville was spot on when he said luiz plays like he's controlled by an 11year old on a playstation.  That might just be my favorite ever bit of punditry. Can imagine him charging out of  a defensive wall and clearing the ball before the kick is taken. What an offensively selfish player.
