I wonder if he is related to Wilfred Pickles, OBE?

I'm sure you are all familiar with Wilfred Pickles, he was a sort of wireless version of Bruce Forsyth back in the day, & had a "hit" radio Show "Have A Go". 

Sadly, he passed away recently, in 1978.
