the fact he went all in with 97 and just happened to hit a full house is just crazy to me

Not really. It's crazy if he does that every time it's limped around to him with any 2 cards but assuming he's been normal up until now then you'd expect the limpers to not be that strong and unable to call the shove. Doing a quick bit of maths it only needs to get folds 2/3 of the time for it to be a profitable play. 

KK is still going to lose 21% of the time to 7d9d. Sometimes they'll hit 2 pair, sometimes a straight or flush and sometimes a FH or better. Whatever the way you lose is irrelevant. Mostly you'll win this 4 out of 5 times and not even think about it (oh I went in ahead, it's justified that I win) - but then you forget that it's also justified that you lose 1 in 5 times.

edit: btw: quick question. Suppose we were playing a board game and I rolled a 6 which worked out very well for me. Would you complain about how unlucky you were? The probability of me rolling a 6 is less than the probability of losing this hand.
