Does setting your own personal poker targets work?

Interesting question for today...

We see many people on the forum saying they want to qualify for something, get to a certain bankroll, reach a certain number of poker points etc.

There are some famous examples on the forum of people hitting their targets (think GaryQQQ's challenge a while ago) and some that haven't (mentioning no names)....

Anyway, the question is...

I find targets like profit, or qualifying for something for something can be dangerous, as these factors are somewhat out of our control, and in the hands of variance. In the past I have set profit targets and lost motivation during a downswings, resulting in the abandonment of the target.

I am a big fan of volume/point targets as these are things we can be in complete control of. Once I have met a volume target I will look at things like profit/roi and whether or not I made more or less than I expected, and why this wad the case.
