Fish comes from Fishing for cards, normally when we dont have the odds to do so. Looking for a straight or a flush for example.

Also the better players at a poker table are known as "Sharks" and what do sharks eat?

    Hi Georgej,

"A fish" is a derogatory term applied to opponents who are thought to be bad players. It's only ever used when the "fish" wins the hand, because many players don't take an outdraw very well.

Some players think it derives from "fishing" for a hand, & it well may, but calling for draws is not necessarily always a bad thing, every player on the planet does it. Unless the "fish" hits. Then it is.

To call a player "a fish" is much the same as calling them "an idiot" really. HM The Queen , who's a classy lady, would never stoop so low.
