Naked Man Who Went Deep In WSOP Main Event Shot By Las Vegas Police In Bizarre Incident

Poker Player Jason Funke Charged Over Aug. 5 Standoff

The man shot by Las Vegas police on Aug. 5 in a bizarre incident outside a church has been identified as Jason Funke, the 490th-place finisher in the 2017 World Series of Poker main event.

Funke was completely naked sitting outside the Life Springs Christian Church and possessing a handgun when police arrived. A standoff ensued, with Funke eventually dropping the weapon and walking away toward police. However, he eventually turned around and ran, and that’s when police shot him in the shoulder. He fell to the ground and was later taken into custody.

Funke reportedly was known to the church, having donated money to it previously. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Funke told an employee before police arrived that he was feeling suicidal. Police said that he also told a church staff member that he had been using acid, marijuana and alcohol. Staff said it appeared he was meditating.

Funke is 25 years old and is from Minnetonka, Minnesota. He has nearly $100,000 in lifetime tournament earnings thanks to scores dating back to early 2013. The $24,867 he cashed for in the $10,000 buy-in main event this summer was the second-largest win of his poker career.

He’s been charged with one count of possession of a dangerous weapon at a school or child care property and one count of indecent exposure.

Funke isn’t the only poker player from deep in the main event this year who is in serious trouble with the law. Paul Senat, who finished 70th in the tournament for $101,000, was out on bond for a manslaughter charge in Florida when competing on poker’s biggest stage
