Tikay, English Bond or Flemish Bond? Posted by Machka
Because I made a reference in the Show to brickwork, with which I have a certain interest, not to say fascination?
Well I don't make this stuff up - "English" & "Flemish" Bond are bricklaying or "brickwork" terms.
Flemish Bond is used for 9" (one brick) walls, say, garden walls. Each course is alternate header & stretcher. Header is "short side to the face", stretcher is "long side to the face".
Englisg Bond is alternate courses, one course headers, one course all stretchers. A "course" is each level of a brick construction, & is one brick (about 3") high.
I did a City & Guilds in Brickwork, we had to construct a Welsh arch. I got 49% in the written part (50% was the max, & you needed 60% total to Pass), but my practical part got "no mark" as it collapsed while the tutor was attempting to mark it. I also failed my C & G in plumbing, painting & decorating, & carpentry & joinery. But I passed in fibrous plasterwork. Which came in handy during my life. Not.
