A question about live poker.

rabdenirorabdeniro Member Posts: 4,486
Ive never played live poker, so I am giving it a go in a couple of weeks, I was wondering how does the casino get their rake ?, is it every time you bet, or is it out of the end pot ?, also what amount do you tip ?.

I assume you mean cash games?

If so, it varies. Most venues rake each pot, but some venues charge per hour.

If it's raked per pot, it's taken after the hand is finished, & the winner pays it.

Tips? Up to you. Tip if you want to, don't if you don't.

If the Dealer is helpful, & you win a tidy pot, bung him a couple of quid.

If I'm playing "live" cash, I generally wait until I'm finished then give the Dealer a decent tip. Assuming I have any money left, obv.

You do this in Vegas too? Can only imagine how tight the dealer must think you are ;)

A few times I've scooped what I thought was a decent pot, flick the dealer a $5 chip, then sift through my winnings only to realise I've won about 32% of what I thought and then ponder if I'm allowed to ask for the 5bucks back, or at least trade it for a couple of $1s.

Ask the dealers if they keep their own tips or if they are pooled. The majority of the casinos in the UK pool them, however a few do use the American style system (which is better IMO as means it's in the dealers interests to run a fast game).

Remember that whenever you bring in a pot, usually half to a third of the chips were yours. Also remember that the casino took rake too.

Personally I don't bother tipping if the pot is under £30 or so. £1 for those above and then I'll give £5 for a big pot of several hundred.

If I see the dealer has handled an awkward situation well, such as a misdeal or a belligerent player , I'll tip just to let them know I saw that they did a good job.

Tipping culture comes from America tho, where the vast majority of dealers are on state minimum wage (sometimes as low as $3/4 an hour), have no healthcare and are freelance so are essentially on a zero hours contract. Those guys I'll look after more.
