Generally, I'm not a big fan of the Grauniad. But, on this occasion, spot on.
I was born & brought up in London. And have spent the last 20-odd years living in the countryside.
The short answer is that most ethnic groups choose not to live in the countryside. Simply because they are not made to feel welcome.
1 village I lived in had its first Asian family move in. And the village shop was suddenly full of people who had morphed from villagers to the KKK. I was waiting for weekly cross burning to commence.
The reverse of this particular coin is that minorities tend to congregate in Cities. The bigger, the better. Particularly Afro-Caribbeans. Immigrants have always tended to start in the poor parts of big Cities, and then assimilate into the broader community. Until now.
This has precisely nothing to do with democracy. Or, for that matter, socialism. The left has not "secured the cities". Inner cities (as opposed to cities) tend to be left wing, and rural communities right wing-that is never going to change. Simply because young poor people vote differently to old retired people.
What does need to change is that rural parts of England need to be more welcoming.
A good example is Shamima Begum. Trafficked as a Minor by a Canadian spy, handed over by him (no doubt with the full knowledge of the UK security services) to ISIS for her to be married off at 15 years old.
We then say she is no longer British-for the "crime" of being trafficked, likely with UK knowledge, to have sex with ISIS.
Meanwhile, we have allowed back in to this country various people who have previously joined ISIS as adults and shot and killed British soldiers.
I remember a few years ago a few politicians sayin "Scotland has loads of space for migriants put them up there " so they decided to put 22 to 24 families on Rothesay and after a few months the papers went there to see how they were getting on, the Guardian told a story of bliss and harmony, how people struggled at first but were settling in well, the Mail told a story of Abd, 42, who said: 'I am depressed now. I feel like I have one option now – to die here. Only die here, nothing else', Wife Rasha said island 'full of old people' and 'where people come to die. Personally ah thought it was a bit harsh on the Isle of Bute ( been loads of times, it's lovely ) ah think the majority who come to this island just see London and that's where they want to go.
