Herons are opportunist flappers! -- I spent years watching the salmon runs in Ireland. The herons are addicted to watching them too, even the 12 to 20lb fish, they could never catch one, and they could never eat one, but they would watch them for hours, there was a place where a salmon might jump on to rocks and the herons would turn up with the tide, just in case a salmon hits his head on a rock and gets stunned. They eat tons of spent fish in winter, but the chances of a spring salmon getting caught by a heron at the weir must be millions to one, still, they probably know very little about odds
