Maddie - time to draw a line?

Tikay10Tikay10 Member, Administrator, Moderator Posts: 171,027

Madeline McCann disappeared in 2007, 11 long years ago.

Whoever is or was responsible, & whatever the rights & wrongs, it's a sad, sad, tale.

To be blunt, Maddie was either murdered at the time - most probable - or was abducted, & is now living her life in some distant land, probably oblivious to the backstory.

So far, the Metropolitan Police have spent £11 million in the search for the truth.

Yesterday, after a formal request, The Met were granted a further £150,000 to continue their investigations. This £150,000 is to fund the search for another 6 months.

Is it time to draw the line on this ghastly affair, or should the inquiry continue indefinitely?

What do you think?

It was an awful thing that happened but at some point you have to draw the line as there are limited funds and this sort of money hasn't been spent on other cases. I would of drawn the line before now.

Lots of things related to this case puzzled me.

Very much doubt the girl was abducted-why would anyone take the 1 child who could cause abductors problems, and leave behind the 2 that couldn't? Isn't it more likely that poor Maddie went looking for her parents?

2 medically trained doctors leave 3 young children home alone for hours while they go out for meals/drinks in a foreign country. Of course they did not deserve this awful tragedy, but if the parents had been 2 chavs, wouldn't a criminal prosecution and social services involvement been automatic?

I fail to see how further British taxpayer money could achieve anything, in this ages old, Portuguese, crime. Again, if the parents were less educated (and wealthy), would money still be spent? There are (sadly) many similar events that have not had a fraction of the resources spent on this sad case. I genuinely feel for the parents, and am sure I would be trying to get investigations to continue were I in their shoes, but time to move on...

Tremendous post, Phil. Full of innuendo, all of which I agree with.

I agree with everything Phil has put. I think you only have to spend a few minutes exploring the internet to see the various theories about this poor child's disappearance.

I agree, it should stop now really. By while the investigations still go on there is still “hope” in the parents eyes. Personally I don’t think they can say stop investigating. I think they need to be told we won’t investigate any further.

I'm sure the family will crack on with any investigation or leads they can, however it's really not practical to keep ploughing in resources. Money and manpower isn't infinite and the case really seems to lack any leads or direction.

Similar with Claudia Lawrence in York, think its coming up to a decade since she vanished. Police announced the other year that the case is going on the backburner and you really can't blame them for making that decision, no matter how hard that might be for her family.

lots and lots of conspiracies with this case regarding the Mccanns its all out there online
e.g. the cadaver dogs allegedly had a 99.9% hit regarding their results one of them sat down in the apartment the other went to the boot of the hire car and sat down yet they refused to use it as evidence
why was the portugease (sp) officer in charge of the case removed and replaced with British officers "his book is revealing in itself"
this is what does it for me tho , their emotions , look at any genuine parent who loses a kid Denise Bulger for example they are in bits their lives ripped apart as i would be if it was one of mine , the Mcanns nothing , they are even smiling in some interviews having a family day out 3 days after her dissappearence , make of that what you will , i could go on but i.ll leave it there

I bet you can, Paige. Your parents made a mistake. All parents make mistakes, and (thank goodness) most don't have tragic consequences.

    However, in Maddie's case:-

    1. She presumably spoke no Portuguese
    2. Her parents went out every night
    3. There were lots of adults (7, I think), yet no-one took a turn in looking after the children (or at least these 3)
    4. The hotel offered a baby-sitting service, but this was not used. They weren't short of money

For all that, I feel desperately sorry for those parents
