Why do we raise at poker ? Sounds an easy question , but is it really, and do we put much thought in to the process ?

Define "Raise" in your question. Are we talking pre-flop opens only? Are we talking about pre-flop 3bets, 4bets, flop check/raises etc - Each of those will have a very different answer.

The simple answer is this-there are 2 ways to win a hand at poker. The first is to have the best hand at showdown. The second, and more common way, is to persuade everyone else to fold.

If you limp, people are in for either cheap or free. That is not wise for your long-term wealth.

The first poker book I ever read had this piece of advice, which is possibly the best I have ever heard:-

"Fold more than you raise, and raise more than you limp. If you are not considering a raise, you should fold."

I never limp into a pot unless someone already has.

    Hope that helps

Aside from what's already been said, the whole point of raising is so that you can win the chips or cash in the middle.

lets look at reasons for raising ,and do we as players give this enough thought
    1value
    2protection
    3 steal

I know there a lot of different circumstances , and its hard to define , but do we as players , give enough thought process to raising , what should we be thinking about before we raise ?

Whether it could be considered sexist that King is ranked higher than Queen, and if in future they will be ranked equally

I often wonder about that because when you watch the pros on Youtube and even on the old Sky Poker channel you do see good players limp, maybe not that often but they do limp now and again.

Players can have a quite advanced limping strategy in certain situations but they have spent a lot of time and effort on this strategy.

Also, just because someone is a good player doesn't mean they make bad plays/decisions.

A decent raise will often discourage other players from playing a more speculative hand, therefore limit the number of opponents and reduce the chances of being outdrawn.
