Bankroll for live events?

Angmar2626Angmar2626 Member Posts: 886
Hey guys,

Hope everyone is starting to feel festive!

Am thinking of dabbling in some live events next year and wondered if anyone had any guidance on bankroll management please?

Obviously some events such as SPT you can qualify online so online BRM applies to the satellites presumably?

However, if you're buying in directly, how many buy ins do you think would be good BRM? Typically use 100BI rule online or 50BI for shots/treats. Would something similar work with live games? Or is that overkill considering I could probably play 10 events or fewer in a whole year?

Do you factor in travel expenses etc into the cost of a tournament when making BRM decisions also?

Thanks for any pointers, much appreciated as ever.

Hey I would say you'll be fine treating them as shots/treats similar to higher buy in online events.like you say sample will be super small, but that means variance is much bigger in the short term, so could easily brick everything all year, so just be aware of that and make sure you don't blow your load 😜

    Thanks for advice :)

When considering the cost of the event would you think something like:

Buy in = tournament buy in + travel + accommodation + food/drink ? Or is that overkill?

It’s not the correct way of doing things but....

I don’t have a bankroll for live play. I just play live for the fun and write the money off in my mind.
I’ll regularly play the £30 rebuy at Derby which is essentially a £100 comp. If i was going by strict bankroll management then I shouldn’t be playing it. I give myself an out by telling meh self it’s a lot softer than online and so I have a better chance of scraping a min cash :)

Obviously if you’re looking to travel and play highish buy in events then i think you should consider total cost.

Play as many smaller games as you can, it's a different animal, longer levels, antes, human beings that can be hard work.
Sell some action for bigger event, it's tough out there!
Play cash, stay off the roulette. Don't drink but take advantage of the drunk!!
    Good Luck

I always try and satellite into large live games, and try pick a nice city or venue so if i bust ( as i often do ) the City is worth a visit, or as in the case of SPTs and Dublin
the bar craic is always good.
UniBet have a good live tour with packages, field very like Sky players lots of recs.
Good luck and enjoy the travels.

Say you have 100 buy ins for live events, won't it take a while (years) to even reach 100 tournies? I don't really see the point in having a "bankroll" per se for live...just whatever you can comfortably afford imo

    Degen ;)

Tbf I know what you're getting at, why have 100 BI if you can't play 100 events? Guess it comes down to comfort level and having a safety net so that you can pull the trigger in stressful spots, just like online.

Having never played live (other than with friends at home over a few beers), I have no idea if I'll start giggling or sweating in certain situations! So definite practice in some local pub games or something will be a good place to start I reckon.

How much of a thing do people think live tells are?

    a) That is where the true skill is in live poker
    b) Urban myth - stick to maths and the occasional timing tell, like online
    c) Somewhere in between

    We’re on the river
    I’ve just gone all in.
You notice that I’m shaking very badly.
So, am I shaking because I’m bluffing? Or shaking because I have the nuts and am desperate for a call?

Knowing the amount of alcohol consumed at the average SPT there is a third option😀

not worth thinking having a live bankroll unless you,re gonna grind live events week after week imho

In terms of expenses it depends on what sort of events you are looking at.

Maybe @Jac35 is on tilt about picking up a littering fine?

The biggest live tells in my experience (bearing in mind this is mostly £100 or less comps) is if someone looks very comfortable with their decision (particularly on the river), there is a good reason for it.

Also, if someone sorta does a huff and puff before flailing their arms in the air then going all in, they have Aces.

Bankroll wise, I wouldn't even have one unless you were planning on grinding a lot of live comps. If it's just an occasional dabble down your local casino then just crack on.
