It's actually counter productive then , because impatient drivers stuck behind them 3 , 4 wide are taking massive chances overtaking blind .

3-4 wide is totally wrong and inconsiderate of the cyclists (and contrary to the highway code)

2 wide is recommended, except for on very narrow roads or bends.

The linked video on that page by Chris Boardman explains it all very well.

2 wide is actually safer for the cyclists and the cars overtaking.
