A police force has been found guilty of discrimination after it refused to give a potential recruit a job because he was a white heterosexual man.
Cheshire Police are believed to be the first organisation in the UK to be found guilty of using positive action to discriminate by deciding to shun 25-year-old Matthew Furlong in 2017.
The force rejected him while in the midst of a diversity drive after a report found in 2015 it was one of only four constabularies to have no black officers.

Let's start with the candidate was "well prepared". Not a shock really-his dad is on the same force. Not likely to be true for a Black applicant-there is not a single black PC amongst the over 2,000 in that constabulary. Anyone think that every single Black candidate, ever, wasn't good enough?
Then let us look at the discriminations themselves. There are not enough BAME police officers. However, in my experience there is no shortage of LGBT officers-quite the reverse.
In Discrimination cases. it is not the case that who alleges must prove-the burden of proof is reversed. So it is not the case that this man proved discrimination-rather, that that Force could not prove that there was not. Somewhere, I expect there was evidence that a certain number of the next batch of recruits were pre-ordained to be female, black etc.
Positive discrimination is a very difficult subject. IMO, it is the lesser of 2 evils. Something has to be done to provide a balance against all white, male police panels having an unconscious bias towards one of their own. Or there will forever be large employers with no Black employees, and people will continue to try and portray the Police as instituionally racist.
