Surely the pilots only had to look out of a window to realise that they were flying North by the position of the sun or how about using one of those newfangled invention thingys called a compass...

It seems that way on the face of it, but as far as the pilots were aware, they were due to fly to Edinburgh, as that was what their Flight Plan said. (Filed the previous evening).

So they fully expected to land in Edinburgh, as they were unaware that the Flight Plan was incorrect.

Presumably, WDL Aviation, who were operating the flight on a lease basis from BA, made the mistake. It may even have been the pilots's mistake, but the pilots were under the impression the flight was bound for Edinburgh, so that's where they went.
