Bradford owner thrilled after camel's weightlifting glory

BRADFORD does not have too many world champions, but it has the best in the business when it comes to the rather niche sport of camel weightlifting.

Qasim Hussain, who is 20 and lives on Toller Drive in BD9, and his trusty humped friend have won the Kharack Mirpur camel weightlifting competition in Pakistan two years on the trot and are looking to secure the hat-trick in 2020.

Over 20,000 spectators turn out yearly to watch the event, which is open to people all over the world.

Mr Hussain explained: "I live in Bradford but the camel stays in Pakistan, where it is looked after by a team of around 20 people
"We have to feed it lots of food to keep its strength up and it probably has to eat the equivalent of what three normal sized cows do to be in good shape for the competition.

"It was entered into the 29 mann category at this year's event and it had to lift over 1,000 kilograms to win the title this year.

"The camel has to carry stones, wrapped up in bags, on its humps and back.

"It takes over 15 minutes to ensure everything is properly secured and isn't going to fall off the camel.

"To pass the test, the camel has to stand upright for a while, then walk around a bit with the stones attached.

"There were 20 people who entered the 2019 contest and I ended up winning for the second year running.

"I'm actually even more proud of winning this year because the camel had to lift more weight to win than it did in 2018.

"It's a really popular event in Pakistan, with up to 30,000 spectators coming along some years."

There looks to be no stopping the dream duo, who celebrated wildly after their impressive victory.

Can Mr Hussain and his super strong sidekick dominate the sport for years to come?

And, who knows, could we see it in Olympics sooner rather than later?

How extraordinary, though it seems a little cruel to me.

I would assume such a "sport" (?) would not be permitted in this country?

What would happen if, in addition to all that weight, & Qasim, the rider chap, they added a straw?
