I seem to remember that legislation requires them to ask for it again after a set period of time, or something along those lines.
It's a total ballache for existing customers, especially people like me who have accounts with 50+ casino/sports/bingo/poker sites and are going to have to do the same thing for most/all of those sites, but at least the industry is finally being forced to do something that's actually going to help protect punters long term.
For those not up to date with regulation I'll stick some stuff in this post from what I have read/understand of the change.

The biggest thing for me is that soon, people will be asked for documents on before they can do anything on a site. This even includes things like using a 'no deposit required' free bet, or free play slots, where you're not wagering anything. A lot of the motive behind this is reducing underage gambling and the ability of children to access gambling.
It makes it much more difficult for underage/problem gamblers to deposit in the first place. Before, some sites would conveniently wait for them to win and try to withdraw before seizing funds and 'giving it to a gambling charity' (read: Tax write-off and site pockets the money indirectly while also trying to take a moral high ground of 'helping' problem gamblers), or they would just completely ignore the fact that the guy who lost 6 figures and self-excluded for life now has a new account.
This way, it's much harder to get money on the site to begin with for underage/problem gamblers, and it's even easier for regulators to hold sites accountable when they let self-excluded and underage players on the site.

There used to be loads of nonsense (not specifically on Sky but industry wide) where someone signs up to a site, people would deposit and lose tons. Then when they finally win, they get asked for 'Know Your Customer' documents when they try to withdraw their winnings. Some players understandably felt aggrieved by the idea that KYC only mattered when they finally won. It'll probs cost sites a few quid losing action from the guy who signs up at 2pm on a Saturday afternoon to stick an acca on, then can't get their account verified for the 3pm KOs. But if that's the biggest downside to this change, then it's well worth it.
Some of the less well known, dodgy sites out there (Karamba in the past, Stakers is another one I've seen on Twitter in the last couple of weeks) have even gone as far as to abuse the KYC system to ask for things like proof of income and notarised documents off the average customer to stall withdrawals.
Obvs this is a ballache and notarised documents come at an expense to the player, so people just leave small amounts in an account as it's not worth the hassle/expense to withdraw like 20-50 quid. Net result, site closes down the account and steals the player's money. Again, I can see this regulation helping the Gambling Commission, ADRs (IBAS, eCOGRA etc.) be able to crack down on sites trying this.

Other things with this regulation:
- Your name and address need to match official documents (e.g. Passport, Driving License). If you're like me and you've signed up to sites as "Andy" rather than "Andrew", or if you've moved recently and been lazy with updating your address on any dormant accounts, now is the time to get it changed before it can become an issue.
NB: Paul Fairhead, whose tweets I have linked here, is well worth a follow on Twitter if you're a regular sports better.
EDIT: Oh cool, Twitter links actually copy the tweets on here. That's pretty neat.
Clicked on my account scrolled down seen a verify account tab next to help tab. It was pretty easy to use had to take a photo of my driving licence and a bank statement, they then sent a message back :- documents will be checked with in 24 hours.
I then contacted cc and asked them if they needed a photo of my birth certificate, he then checked what i had already sent he cleared the account straight away.
I would contact cc on live chat if your account has not been cleared by tomorrow they will sort it out straight away.
Cleared my account just in time for a race at Kempton and lost £5
EDIT: nevermind, I read safc's post fully and that answers that.
Maybe this is becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Will Sky reimburse my lost free roll games that I worked so hard to win.
