Iv'e always been a gambler (Or a degen I think its now called) 3 card brag, shoot pawnies, spoof, poker dice all these kind of games but I had never played Hold-Em.
About 2005 ( I think ) I was reading a national newspaper and they were advertising a free poker competion in conjunction with 888 to be played on the internet, I had just picked up an old PC so I thought I might give it a go. Top 10 finishers got prizes ( Poker sets and the like ) 1st prize was a ticket into the Main Event plus hotel, flights and spending money.
It was played over 3 weeks, 3 nights a week there were 20,000 + entries, anyway to cut a long story short I managed to get to the HU final.
I think we played for about 4-5 hours, the guy I was playing was called Mccormark ( He was from Dundee ) there was nothing in it regarding the chip count, anyway in the final hand I had 22, the flop came somethin like 239 rainbow, I shoved all in, ( if he called me it was basically for the tournament ) He snap calls, he has 23, the turns a brick, the rivers a THREEEEEEEEEE, AAAAARGH, I'm about 96% going into the river. ( Memories not the best but this is how I remember it ).
That was my first time playing Hold-Em, 2nd, won long weekend to Monte Carlo, didnt really fancy it, cashed it in for £1,000, Took my wife, son and late father to the Cliffs Hotel in Blackpool for 5 days, ( Nae difference lol ) It was February, it **** down for the full 5 days didn't leave the hotel, drowned my sorrows every night for what could have been, Ah well.

Then "Late Night Poker" launched on T.V and I was instantly hooked.
Devil Fish, Triple P, Pink Lady, Dave Colclough, Lucy Rokash, Simon Trumper, Padraig himself, Ross and Barney Boatman, Joe Beevers, Ram Vaswani, Surrinder Sunar, Ian Frazer etc complete with the effevescent commentary of Jesse May.
I sometimes wonder if they realised they were probably responsible for the British poker boom and wonder how many careers were launched by that series
First site I signed up to was "Pokah". I miss the good old days lol.
This is a great idea for a thread.
If I get the time I'll draft a few replies, as it rang some memory bells with me, especially the mention of Dave Colcough. Dave & I were close mates & became business partners, &, to cut a long story short, my friendship with Dave has probably cost me in excess of £100,000 over the last 15 years, & even to this day, costs me a few thou per year. (Dave passed away 2 or 3 years ago).
Longgggggg story. In fact there's almost a book there.
The word LOVE.
A few years ago ,a little while before social media , yahoo had yahoo groups and yahoo games, mainly board games.
Chess , a Scrabble derivative, blackjack, backgammon etc.
You could click on users names of peolpe you were playing against they would have some sort of profile, I think yahoo missed the boat there, if Yahoo only knew that social media was just around the corner.
I clicked on some name , looked at a profile, and they said they loved poker .
I was taken aback, I didn't think it was ok to say you loved poker, not on your profile anyway, its something you had to not admit to.
Or maybe you could?
I was fascinated about having community cards , I could see how it was way better.
When I found out you could admit to loving it and play online, I got myself a land line and proceeded to lose hundreds.
After losing loads, I joined a poker forum to see what I was doing wrong.
I got told why straight away and refused to believe a single word of it.
Because I could simply make people fold. Easy game.
Played chess at a fairly serious level as a child.
Joined my dad's 3-card brag school at the age of 9.
Took up quizzing waaay too seriously.
Card-counter for a while at Blackjack.
Loved "Late Night Poker". No poker product has ever made for better TV. So had to try it. Put 2 x £200 on Party and Pacific (now 888). Lost on one in a matter of days. Got very lucky on Party, so kept playing.
What a load of tosh!
It's because I'm a degenerate.
