It's unforgivable in this day & age that a national newspaper uses the term "gypsy". It's "Gypsy".

Gypsies are a race of people, exactly as, say, English, Indian or Peruvian are, & it's insulting not to capitalise the name. Of course, being the Daily mail it's both deliberate & provocative.

I have to admit I'm on the fence with this one.

What is the difference between a Gypsy and a Traveler ? It would seem that many Travelers only play the Gypsy card when they want to complain about harassment claiming they are victims of racial prejudice.

When i was a kid in North Street Stoke we had a Gypsy camp at the top of the road, the Elder was a guy called Barney Boswell and I can remember that when he died people from all over the world flew in to attend his funeral. The camp stayed in situ until the A500 was built and the Boswell clan moved.

In all the time that they were there they coexisted with the residents frequently taking me and other kids back home when we fell asleep playing in the vans with their kids and never causing a problem re anti social behaviour, noise, mess etc. Why ? because they were real Romany Gypsies (their roots were in Romania) and they had respect for people and their lives.

Most Travelers I've encountered in my working life, and there's been a few ask you to respect their ways etc which is fine but then they show a total lack of respect for anyone else's land, property and quality of life and when you act to protect whats yours you get the race card.

I have to say we've always had permanent sites in Stoke and there's been almost no problems that I can recall.

Minister for homelessness Heather Wheeler apologises for calling rough sleepers 'tinkers and knife-cutters' in 2017 email

Heather Wheeler came under fire after a 2017 email emerged in which she described rough sleepers in her South Derbyshire constituency as ‘the traditional type, old tinkers [and] knife-cutters’.

It provoked a series of complaints, with Mrs Wheeler accused of stigmatising Irish traveller communities through her use of the word ‘tinker’.

Could someone please explain how the police can identify a Gypsy/Traveller?
Do they carry special ID cards?
What's stopping anyone with an Irish accent and a caravan/motor home to claim to be a Gypsy/Traveller?
