I was 25 and had spent a number of years backing horses, and dogs. Mostly slow horses and accident prone dogs. I had been involved since I had begun investing my paper round profits, so I was quite experienced in boosting bookmakers coffers.
So on this particular day I had collected what I considered a large win from my local bookies. Around £700, a lot of money in those days.
Have you noticed a lot of oldies say that all the time "a lot of money in those days". I haven't a clue what they cost these days, but I can remember when the first mini came out they cost £500 brand new.
I was only three when this happened, but I remember someone telling me.
Anyway it was a lot of money in those days.
Having collected the money, I came up with a cunning plan regarding the investment of a portion of the proceeds, before I returned all the money to the bookmakers.
Whenever I have l have been lucky enough to win, it has only ever been a lend, as I have always loyally returned the money.
The cunning plan was a golf bet.
My one and only golf bet ever.
I placed the bet on what was at the time known as The Suntory World Matchplay, at Wentworth, the week before the tournament started.
By the time the tournament started, I had done my money, so the result had become absolutely crucial to my financial well being. I was skint.
I had bet £50 on Seve at 9 to 1. He had not won this tournament before.
During my betting life to this point I had been used to getting the result of a dog race in say 30 seconds in the case of a dog race, quicker if you regularly backed accident prone dogs, and a couple of minutes in the case of a horse race.
This was a whole new level, 5 days. I don't know how I got through it. I couldn't sleep, Totally nerve-racking. In the 38 years that have followed, I never repeated it.
I am going to cut this short now before Essexphil starts complaining. I think he goes on about walls more than Donald Trump.
Anyway back to the golf, he played Ben Crenshaw in the final.
Crenshaw was 3 up after 16. Seve took the lead for the first time after the 28th. The it was nip and tuck, until they were all square going down the last.
I am at the end of my tether, never again, even though he did win, and I got enough money to have bought me a brand new mini, a few years before.

What do you think of the course Hendo? Have you played it?
Looks surprisingly benign right now, but I bet it's a mare when the wind gets up.
Whole coast looks lovely, can't believe i've never been there.
Rahm
Schauffele
Cantlay
EW,
Fowler
Hatton
Good luck all.
Hope none of you are on Rory.
After he put his tee shot OOB at the first, he ran up a quadruple bogey 8.
Had a few quid e/w on:
STENSON
SCHAUFFELE
CANTLAY
LOWRY
Woodland 70/1
Sullivan 140/1
All E/W.
40/1 on Sky Bet anyone?
I'm sure there will still be plenty of takers at 1/5th the odds 8 places.
I haven't had a golf bet since 1981.
