What is the TRUTH about Geoffrey Boycott, his lover and her black eyes? As anger rages over Theresa May's decision to give cricket legend a knighthood, RICHARD KAY looks back at the sportsman's darkest hour RICHARD KAY: Over the years, Boycott (inset, last year) has been accused of many things - being rude, selfish, vain and a chauvinist - and has rarely demurred. But, for more than two decades, he has denied vociferously that he was a woman-beater. The incident, for which he was given a three-month suspended prison sentence, fined £5,000 and ordered to pay one franc in compensation after being accused of raining 20 punches on his then-girlfriend, divorcee Margaret Moore (left, in court holding images of her injured face and right in 1998), has cast a long shadow over his career and reputation and - until this week - was said to have prevented the award of a knighthood. This helps to explain why he was bristling on the Today programme, as the claims were brought up yet again on what should have been one of the proudest days of his life. Asked about criticism from a Women's Aid chief that his honour sent a 'dangerous message' about domestic abuse, 78-year-old Boycott responded: 'I don't give a toss about her, love. It's 25 years ago, so you can take your political nature and do whatever you want with it. You want to talk to me about my knighthood, it's very nice of you to have me, but I couldn't give a toss.'

Revenge takes many forms. By handing her hero - the convicted woman-basher and cricketing legend Geoffrey Boycott - a knighthood, Theresa May has managed to alienate even more people in the UK than she did over her bungled Brexit negotiations. The woman who introduced a Domestic Violence bill into the house of Commons (currently in limbo because Parliament has been suspended) has used her resignation Honours list to settle scores on all sides, dishing out 57 gongs mostly to advisors who were merely doing their jobs (some would say extremely poorly) but none is more audacious and outrageous than the ennobling of Mr Boycott, a divisive figure even within the game which has ruled his entire life. May's name now stands for **** singlemindedness, an inability to listen to expert advice, a blind refusal to compromise and - the final icing on the cake - an astonishing lack of empathy.
Sir Geoffrey Boycott's ex-girlfriend condemns ‘disgusting’ knighthood
The ex-girlfriend of Sir Geoffrey Boycott has said he should “hand his knighthood back” in her first interview since it was announced.
Margaret Moore, 67, called Theresa May’s decision to honour the retired England cricketer "disgusting", saying she would “never forget” the night he hit her.
Sir Geoffrey, 78, was convicted in France in 1998 of beating computer consultant Mrs Moore in a Riviera hotel.
She suffered bruising to her face and blackened eyes after being hit up to 20 times at the Hotel du Cap in Antibes in October 1996.
Speaking to The Sun, Ms Moore said: “I will never forget that night. It was horrible. What sort of man does that and is then made a knight?
"He should hand it back."
