Christopher Halliwell: How detective Steve Fulcher's investigation into the killer of Sian O'Callaghan cost him his career The murders of Sian O'Callaghan and Becky Godden rocked the nation in 2011 and their killer Christopher Halliwell has since been sentenced to life.
While it seems like a straightforward case, the man who caught the killer, former Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher, ended up disgraced and losing his career over it.
As the story is anaylsed by To Catch a Serial Killer with Trevor McDonald on ITV, we take a look at the case that ruined several lives.
Who is Steve Fulcher?
Fulcher, 52, from Wiltshire, was a well respected senior police officer whose life was shattered when he caught Halliwell.
Fulcher, who is appearing in the To Catch a Serial Killer show to tell his side of the story. He resigned because of the backlash after he interrogated the cabbie without any legal representation and with nothing on tape.
During the grilling, Halliwell confessed to killing O'Callaghan, and also told the detective where the body of another victim was - former sex worker Godden.
However, while in custody he refused to admit what he had done, throwing a spanner in the prosecution's case.
Why did he resign?
The original confession also led to a trail of evidence suggesting further murders. However, the manner in which Fulcher gained Halliwell’s statements breached police procedure. He failed to caution him and denied him access to a solicitor - compromising the subsequent court case against him.Fulcher said: “My view is that I have brought two daughters back to their mothers and I’ve prevented other victims resulting from Halliwell’s continued pursuit of his career as a serial killer."But for my course of action Becky would still be in that field, Sian would never be found and Christopher Halliwell would be walking the streets."
