Always find the idea of gambling sites all having this "Responsible Gambling Week" very uncomfortable myself.

Sites are still getting fined on a regular basis for letting self-excluded gambling addicts punt off 6-figure sums on Sports/Roulette, sending out promotion emails to restricted customers etc - To be clear, I'm not talking about Sky or any other site in particular, but the industry as a whole.

I guess actually tacking the problem by doing things like doing advanced KYC checks on players that lose over a fixed amount to make sure they can afford to lose would hit companies' bottom line too hard for it to ever be allowed to happen. Of course, certain less reputable sites (not Sky) are willing and able to throw the same advanced KYC checks, requests for notarised documents and so on at winning customers as a means of slowing down a withdrawal request.

At the same time, anyone who actually tries to win money through matched betting, arbitrage, doing +EV casino offers or just being a legitimately knowledgeable sports punter gets stake restricted/promo banned/account closed quicker than ever before.

IMO it's up to bookmakers to make sure they can't be beaten by these types of players through smarter promo selection and better pricing, rather than denying them action - But that's for a different thread some other time.

It's hypocritical to me for the industry to promote responsible gambling in this way while sites continue to act the way they do now towards both winning and losing players.

It has the same 'token' feel to me as when all these big companies that have people in low skilled jobs working on zero hours contract for minimum wage are suddenly dispensing 'helpful' advice like "Go for a run, you'll feel better afterwards" because it's Mental Health Awareness Day and they can make themselves look good, totally neglecting to mention the fact that they themselves are responsible for the long/unsocial hours, lack of job stability and not paying a living wage that are causing some of these problems for people in the first place.

Companies generally seem to want the positive image that 'caring' about these kinds of issues provides, without actually doing anything to fix the problem since it affects their profits. The gambling industry is no different here.

Try advanced KYC checks on customers that lose £1k in a night or £10k in a year, without exception, and not snap restricting/promo banning every customer that takes EV off a sportsbook or casino site. Then we can talk about "Responsible Gambling Week".

    Actions speak louder than words.

(EDIT: Again, I'm not directing any of this post at Sky specifically, but the industry as a whole)
