Britain's largest golden nugget worth £80,000 found in river by treasure hunter

A treasure hunter has found the largest gold nugget in Britain - at the bottom of a Scots river.
The diver, who wishes to remain anonymous, discovered the 22-carat lump using a method called "sniping"

Weighing 121.3 grams it is the biggest of its kind in the UK and is thought to be worth £80,000.
It was found in two pieces which fit together perfectly but leave a small hole in the middle, earning it the name the Reunion Nugget.

What happens in these situations? Does the finder keep the money made? Does the landowner have any rights to the money etc.

I believe the gold belongs to the Crown.

On Gold Rush, they usually pay the landowner 10-15%.

i dunno but guessing with it being treasure it will go to the state and they will be compensated with a percentage of its worth , could be totally wrong tho

Bit of a rubbish hobby for the finder then. "Look at what you could have won".

Gold Prospecting and Panning In The UK

    Permission
Before panning anywhere you need to make sure you have the permission of the landowner (preferably in writing), but be careful, it is the owner of the riverbank whose permission you need, not the owner of the surrounding arable or pasture land. The mineral rights to the area may even belong to someone completely different to the landowner, so you really do need to take care.

the bed of the river belongs to the landowner that owns the land along side it if its one land owner one side and another on the other each owns the bed up to the midway ,the only difference is in tidal rivers where it gets complicated

I really don't see the point in treasure hunting then. Finding an 80k nugget and having to hand it over would be pretty gutting.....

    "Good day love?"
"Yeah great day thanks, found a massive nugget of gold and made the rich even richer."

    You wouldn't.
You would get the landowners permission before you started, and agree a deal.
In the US the landlord usually get 10-15%.

Ah right, I understand now. So there is some financial gain then. Quite right too.

There are some good documentaries on Discovery about gold.
I watch 3 of them, Gold Rush, Gold Divers, and White Water Gold.

Gold Rush starts with Parker a 16 year old wet behind the ears kid, who knew nothing, messing about on his Grandads claim.
Lat year he got over $7 million worth.

Dad finds Britain's largest gold nugget worth £50,000 in Scottish river
It the biggest nugget to have been found in British waters for 500 years and experts believe there may be more gold in mystery river.

An explorer has struck gold after discovering Britain’s largest nugget in a Scottish river.
The man – who wants to remain anonymous – found the precious 85.7g lump while diving at the mystery location and it is estimated to be worth upwards of £50,000.

It was discovered two years ago by a British father but he has kept it a secret until now.

The dad, who has been hunting for gold as a hobby for 20 years, said: “I was following a crack in the bedrock and found around 2g in fine gold. This then led to a pocket, where I uncovered the nugget.

The owner is unsure what to do with his find but is currently keeping it in a safety deposit box.
Dr Neil Clark, author of Scottish Gold: Fruit of the Nation and curator at The Hunterian, University of Glasgow, believes the shape of the Douglas Nugget could mean there is more gold waiting to be found close to the mystery location.
He said: “It is difficult to say whether this nugget broke from a larger chunk or not.”
