We stay with Greyhounds again - we have little choice - and following Meets at Sunderland, Newcastle & Nottingham, our tour of the North & Midlands takes us to Sheffield Owlerton today. I don't have prices yet, but will stick them up as soon as they are available on Saturday.

It's a cracking venue, and is part of a complex just down the road from Hillsborough which includes Stock Car Racing, Speedway, Dog Racing & Napoleons Casino, which had an amazing poker cardroom. The Tables were the biggest poker tables you'd ever see & we played 12 or 13 handed - think about that.

Smoking was allowed, encouraged even, so we'd sit there at a 13 seat poker table with our ashtrays on the table. Times have changed. The chips they used were so dirty & sticky that you could lift a stack of 5 simply by holding on to the top chip. And, uniquely across any cardroom I've ever been to across the UK, Ireland, Europe or the USA, they had a 200 denom tournament chip. No idea why. The small denoms were 25, 50, & 200, there was not a 100. Go figure.

Compo & I did a TV poker show from there in May 2007. I can remember the date precisely because - chirp incoming - I won their £500 entry Spring Cup the same weekend. OK, OK, poker was easier then. A LOT easier...

It's a great venue & Thewy & I used to play there 2 or 3 times every week.

NB; I'm told by a good source that T2 in the 6.22 is a Non Runner, though most sites are still quoting it. If T2 is your intended selection, best to hold off until it is confirmed. If it is a NR, there may be a reserve dog inserted in it's place. I'll advise if I hear further.

Here's the late George Geary, who rarely missed an MTT at Naps Sheffield. That big fan in front of him was to disperse the smoke from a table full of smokers.

He was the biggest nit going, but in Level 1 he always ran a bad bluff with 7-3 or whatever & would then show. "Advertising, my son, advertising". Oh what times.
