What exactly are they testing for?

Also if they test a "key worker" on a Monday and it comes back negative 24 hrs later, how do they monitor that person?
They could pick up the virus at a later date, have no symptoms, and spread it around.
If we all get a test, whats the current advice if you think you have symptoms?
Stay at home and self-isolate (we're already doing that).
