Tournament Add On advice.

edrichedrich Member Posts: 1,913
Good afternoon all,

In a 1 rebuy, and 1 add on tournament, at what stack size would you not add on?

Also, are there any other factors to take into account?

Starting stack is 2k, with a 3k add on after the rebuy period ends. 25-30 players and usually around 8 rebuys.

TYIA, Ed.

I can't imagine not wanting to add-on in a 1R1A unless I had an absolutely massive chip advantage. You see people with massive stacks in unlimited rebuys sometimes but it's much less common in a 1R, especially in a field that small. Maybe if I had something silly like 10x the add-on it would start to seem not worth it?

There's probably a mathematical answer to this.

It depends on both stack size and average stack size.

Having said that, 30k chips is probably close to the number

In the tournament described I'd always take it as you get more than the original chips for the same money. That is what I always follow on Sky. I can only think I wouldn't do it if I had a monster stack or by accident.

For other tournaments where you get the same chips as the original buy in it depends. I'd say my default is not to take the add on. I'd make exceptions for all kinds of reasons. Examples I just thought of include if it was a soft table; if I could get my chip stack above more of the table in a bounty hunter; if I didn't have many tables running so could give comcentrate more on that table; if it was the mini and I was running well in the main, or just because I fancied it.

    Isn't that "every time" :)

Got me; I think that is probably more "too many times". In my defence, I did think the OP really wanted to know what he should do rather than what I do.

In the specific circumstances in the question, I think the answer is to rebuy nearly always. With a big stack you aren't likely to get value from a 2k add on and you should refuse, with a 3k add on, I think you must nearly always get value. I think you are more likely to make a mistake if you don't add on than if you do (8 rebuys amongst 25 players doesn't suggest that really big stacks are common). If the add on is too much for your bankroll then you are in the wrong tournament.

There's probably a mathematical answer to this.

The answer seems to be unanimous that you should nearly always add on.

I am aware that each chip does not have an equal value in a tournament but, with my example, (which is not a bounty hunter by the way) 25 runners and 8 rebuys, there would be 141k chips in the game, assuming everyone adds on.
If I have a 12k stack at add on time, I am increasing my stack by 25% and buying just over 2% of the total chips in the game. I am also potentially almost doubling my outlay.

What are the factors that makes this mathematically correct?
