playing live

hey guys, i am going to my local casino tomorrow night to play a £30 FO and hopefully some 1/2 cash.  I need advice on how to play these strange but very nice people.
i last played live about a year ago and it was fun but still to this day i cant get my head around how these people played, some little old lady shouted at me coz i folded 99 pre with 2 allins in front of me (i was against 4 over cards) witch i thought was very funny.  one guy raised 4x pre and the whole table started laughing saying haha you have AA, i cant understand any of it.
these people have alot less experience than me (i think) should i see this game or play it the same way as you should play 10 or 20nl (sit tight and play big hands strong) or can i loosen up? any advice would be appreciated.

Yeah its pretty low standard.  As for playing tight, I dunno. I`m sure tag would work but when you are 10 handed on the btn and the whole table limps along, there isnt many hands I could justify folding there, esp coz if you hit you will prob get paid big.

Are you northwest freechips.  Whats ur local casino? Manchester grosvenor?  Manchester 235 ?( that is such a nice casino)

    gl anyway.

Ive been to Leo`s a few times, its quite nice, that is prob my closest casino actually.  As for big raises getting called,  whenever Ive played they would be called but I spose you can judge the table etc.  They usually only have 1/1 running after the tourney, so I dont know how different that would be to 1/2.  Cant see it being that much different.

It's the same in most casinos - people like to see a flop early and just limp in and call raises whilst they are cheap - IMO the best thing I find to do is play your cards for the first few levels - when you hit a monster you will get paid from it - after the blinds go up then start playing, people won't limp in as much and they won't be willing to call much raises because it is to much of a hit to their stack!!

Don't get tricky. Also, sit with 100bbs / the maximum, you're losing value if not.

    As a basic reference:

limp call (with odds) with all pps < 1010/ Ace X wheel cards suited / suited connectors 78+. Yes, your limp calling range is now pretty polarized to a competent player but this is really not an issue!

raise with your AQs+ JJ+ holdings. I sometimes limp with JJ, AQ, even QQ if the game is super loose, given you often get 5-6 way pots. Not only is your hand disguised, but you're not left playing a bloated pot with one pair oop / with no info.

play all big hands pre/flop/turn/river fast, if anyone has a draw or anything they're not going anywhere.

having said that, pot control is crucial with marginal holdings, nothing wrong with check calling in alot of spots where you would usually bet. I also check back for pot control in raised pots with top pair and extract two streets of value later.

    Pour example

9 handed, 1 - 1 game, pretty loose. I limp utg+1 KQo, two other limpers, blinds make up/check, pot £5

Q 8 2 rainbow, check check I bet £4, fold fold call fold. Turn 2, checked to me. I could bet here, but i fold out some weaker Qs, random 8s etc. So check behind. River 10, check. Oppos hand is now face up as one pair etc, so here (if you're young like me this works well since people regard me as an internet kid who is always bluffing river if they check behind turn etc) so i lead for 11 and they snap with 910.

Basically, checking behind either flop or turn to extract an extra street of value later is something i find to be +ev live. Try it out!

Don't bluff unless it is the sweeeetest spot- people do randomly look you up.

If you do decide to barrel, fire either one on the flop or all three. Two barrelling then giving up is one of the biggest leaks i've identified over the years. (Exception - barreling twice then catching middle/top pair on river, checking back for showdown value can be right depending on the situation.)

Err thats all thats in my brain atm. I think i read a pretty good post somewhere about the transition from online to live small stakes cash games (admittedly in vegas, but the 1-2 and 2-5 games there are only marginally different to here really). If you're interested i'll try and find it.

    Hi Free.

Live play in a £30 jobbie?

    1) IGNORE dumb comments by stupid people at the table. It's your money, play any way you like.

    2) Tight early - VERY tight. Nobody passes early doors, so let the speed merchants bust themselves before you start to get involved.

    3) Do not out-think youself. If you do not play a hand for 2 hours, because you are card-dead, then decide that your image will enable you to get a move through, forget it. They will not have noticed.

    4) An UTG Rsise - intrended to rep strength - will also escape their radar. Just wait untuil the hands come, & don't try dancing.

    5) Once you are beyond the first 6 levels, you can begin to play properly & "open out", as the stations will have been weeded out by now, & the "better" players left in. And it's easy to play against better players.

    Enjoy.

hi all, had a great night.
we arrived at the casino just after 8 and it was empty so sat down had a few drinks and registered for the tourney that starts at 9;15.  at 9;15 we head over to the tables (me and the Mrs) only to see a total field of 11 runners so im not all that happy, lots of debate is taking place one guy don't wanna play short handed, one guy is moaning about the small prize pool so its decided everyone puts another £20 in the pool and we all get another 5k in chips, im now happy starting with 100BB suits me, the floor manager comes over and says we all need to put in another £2 in reg fees ok no probs but one old guy refused to put in the £2 so we all get the extra £22 back.
its now 9;45 and i have not seen a hand we r now playing a semi FO (1 rebuy in the first 4 levels) and it starts.
after 1 hour of play im on about 9k and still 6 handed on my table when tight young guy raised 3.5x in the CO im in BB, i have 99 so i flat call flop comes Q rag rag i check raise putting him all in he calls showing Q 10, i so wish i had 3 bet pre im now back to 5k.
other table has now lost a player so we r now playing 10 handed, a big guy well very big guy (made bigshann look like a lollipop stick) has bout 15k chips with blinds at 200/400 he limps UTG then call, call so 1800 in the pot, it fold to me on the button i look to see J4 im all in.  big guy dwells up my heart is racing when he says 'i wanted to see a flop' and he folds, he then says 'i might of been ahead' i say 'you was' and show.
i now have a loose rep and wanna get a hand soon as big guy is playing every pot and will pay me off.  anyway we get to the end of level4 and i have 6k in chips so i rebuy im now on 11k.
the next hour the big guy takes a few players out always going in behind but keeps getting lucky. the Mrs went out in 5th so now 4 handed with 3 payed im short stack with 12k blinds at 600/1200 other guys say shall we take £10 off each place for 4th i say ok.
im on the button and look to see KK wahoo a hand and i wanna get payed so im not pushing all in, i min raise with big guy in SB hoping he will reraise nope he folds but old guy in BB calls, flop 3 8 9 and he shoves all in CALL CALL CALL, happy days, he shows A4 turn 4 river ace nooooooo.
i had a real good time and apart from a few players the standard of play weren't all that bad, one guy on my table played DYM stt for a living.  next time i play live i will play on a Friday as its 50/60 runners and im really looking forward to it.

Haha, this made me lol. messin it up 4 everyone for the sake of 2 quid.  I wouldve paid it for him the miser.  People and their principles.

Bad turnout then.  Glad you had a good time tho. That was pretty sick way to go out.  I thought you were more interested in the cash games afterwards to be honest which is why I thought you made your initial post.  I take it there was not much action in that department looking at the tourney fiel but that is where you will be making your money.

Well a shame it was such a small field, but I fancy you have the taste of it now.

The old boy who argued over £2. It happens every night in Live Poker, mainly when agreeing "business" at the end of a Tourney. It's a power thing, usually by guys who are hen-pecked at home. Suddenly, in a poker tourney, they have a whiff of power, so they love it. Wait till you see "Deal" negotiations, maybe 5 peeps chopping up £6,000, & one will argue & reject the deal for a fiver, while screaming & shouting like a kid, going red in the face with rage & indignation!

I once saw a fight in Galsa Notts - proper fight, Police called & everything, over a SINGLE disputed 25 denom chip when "colouring up" the "25's", in a Touney where we all began with 10,000 chips, & the average was now 47,000.....go figure.
