Back up internet.

After skimming another thread about a user having issues with a disconnection, and with the recent major problems Virgin Media and also Sky Broadband at one point had, we can safely assume that any ISP can be prone to disconnection now and again - even if it's just a few seconds. It could be quite costly to a poker player, especially those who multi-table.

So it got me thinking about a backup internet, so to speak.

The majority of us have access to the internet with both a home broadband connection, and also via our mobile providers.

My first question would be, would anything flag up to Sky Poker if you were to quickly access their servers in the same session with 2 different connections/IP addresses? I understand account sharing etc are a big no-no and this could potentially be seen as 2 different people playing on the same account.

My second question would be - if it's not against any rules - is it possible to have your phone plugged into your computer/laptop or used as a WiFi hotspot to automatically connect to a mobile connection if your main/home internet connection is disconnected for any reason? And what would the quickest possible method of doing this with the least 'downtime'?

I looked it up in the past, and think it is possible through internet sharing or something, but does anyone specifically do this for poker purposes? What is their set-up? And how do they find it?

As I am planning to perhaps play poker more seriously in future, this is something I'd like to explore to avoid any very costly disconnections.

Thanks for any advice,
Cheers

    Hi Dazzman,

I realise this question is aimed at Sky , so before they answer.

I have Sky broadband at home and Three mobile on my phone.

I can switch between the two providers at will and have never had any problems.

I could even , have one table on my mobile and another table on my Pc, two different providers and it would run seemlessly.

When my home internet has ever gone down, I can use my mobile as a hotspot without any problems.

    Thanks for the info, @mumsie

It seems it is okay to change connections then. I actually think I was trying to connect with my pmobile when Virgin Media went down a few weeks back, but I can't remember if it worked very well, as my connection only went down for a minute or 2 each time.

But it is something I may experiment with to prepare if the worst should happen again.

I can't help much with this stuff, but I don't see a problem with a back up connection &/or tethering to your Moby as a Hotspot.

There's obviously the concern that some may use it to get involved in jiggery pokery, but Sky would catch them soon enough if they were up to no good, whilst at the same time ignoring what is clearly innocent & legit use.

    And theres more.

I can be playing at home on my PC and I need to pop out.

I can then access my PC though my mobile when Im at lidls.

Im not one to show off, but thats 2 providers at the same time :/

    Thanks Tikay for the clarification.

I'm pretty Tech-Savvy so I'm sure i'll figure it all out with a bit of googling.

Mumsie, I don't think I'd like remotely accessing my computer from my phone for the purpose of poker. Purely down to the fact I hate using my phone to even just browse the internet. All that pinching of fingers and scrolling really annoys me. But it's certainly a viable solution :D

Cheers for the thread @thedazzman when the virgin media broadband went down a few weeks ago i just used my phone to play. I'am not very Tech-savvy and never thought about using my phone data for my laptop. Just tried it and it worked fine cheers Daz.

No worries @safc71 Glad to help someone out.

I really can't stand playing poker on a mobile device, so ideally I would still like to play on the PC if the worst ever happens again and my home connection fails mid-session.

I'm just planning and preparing for it happening again.

When I'm at my caravan I have to use my mobile data on my phone and its hotspot because my van is at the wrong end of the park for the sites own unsecured wifi.

Never had a problem and used it at home when the leccy tripped during a session, switching from House broadband to phone with no probs.
