FAO The Multi-Tablers suffering from Software crashes

thedazzmanthedazzman Member Posts: 949
I understand this has been a recurring problem for some time, and has been documented somewhat in some threads.

Now that I have been playing on SkyPoker regularly over the last couple of weeks, I can understand the frustrations, as I have been kicked off the client on a few occasions when I have been multi-tabling.

I generally do not go above playing 10 tables, as that seems to be the breaking point. However, I have noticed something very unusual, that I would like to explore. It could maybe be related to the crashes/memory leaks.

When my 9th or 10th table opens, I generally notice a little shift in the smoothness of play, and it gets ever so slightly laggy. That's the reason I tend not to play any more. However, when the last table opens (the point when it starts to lag) there is a little ping sound. I only ever hear it when the problem table opens.

I was curious, and browsed to my SkyPoker installation directory. In there, there is a 'Sounds' directory, with a single file; 'beep.mp3' and that is the exact sound I hear.

What I am wondering is, if any of the other users suffering from this issue hear this sound? Does it happen around the same point as me (the laggy point)? Have you ever heard this sound at any other time when using the client? Or any other thoughts?

I'm actually hoping this sound is related, and maybe, just maybe, it's a warning sound to alert us to stop opening tables as a crash is imminent.

At least they won't be random anymore if this were the case.

I don't think there is any real mystery here. The app is built on Adobe Air which performs awfully on all platforms and will continue to eat memory until it reaches its limit. If you don't have a lot of memory available it will crash. It's using 1GB on my iMac right now and is by far the most memory hungry app I'm running. I believe the situation is much worse on Windows.

The Air framework has seen some improvements in this arena but it's not clear whether the Sky Poker app has been updated recently enough to benefit from them. The About screen on my version has a copyright date of 2010. We are using software that may be more than ten years old. Expect the worst.

    Nostri speaks volumes.

Ive had a peek at the Java script in an adjacent folder to the beep file.

    sky.js version: 1.39 13-07-2009 09:40

I also fired up the Download client, I heard that verysame beep on the 6th table and most other tables I opened above 6.

I actually cant download the site and have to play in the browser. It gets laggy after 3 tables and wont tile properly, plus I have to go to the home page every break and log in again to enable lobby access etc.

    Doesn't stop me enjoying. It's just a total P I T A.

What @NOSTRI says certainly makes perfect sense, however, the randomness of how that beep sound only plays after a number of tables are opened is quite weird and mysterious.

Thanks for investigating @mumsie and that sure does back up what nostri says about it being very old. Does your tables start to slightly lag too after the 6th table is opened and hearing that sound?

@TheEdge949 that's a shame that you cannot play on the client. At the end of last year/start of this year when I attempted to play on SkyPoker I was forced to only play on the browser as the client just would not load. I gave up, because as you say, it's a right PITA.

What happens when you try to play in the client?

It says to download and run Adobe air. When I try it says that it's already installed and says that the client cannot be installed.

It's no biggie for me as I rarely try and play more than 3 tables, Monday being the exception.

That's fair enough. I was curious if it was the same issue I had. And there was a few forum threads about it. I did come back to post about what I had done which seemed to fix it.

But it seems your issue is not the same. I am happy to try help though if you would prefer to play on the client. Just give us a shout - unless you play on a Mac. I know nothing about those :D
