‘I’ll choke you out:’ West Yorkshire Police officer removed from frontline duties over arrest video

A police officer has been removed from frontline duties after footage emerged appearing to show a man being arrested while being told “chill out or I’ll choke you out”.

The 45-second clip, filmed from inside a home in Halifax, shows two male uniformed officers grappling on a pavement with a man wearing shorts and a T-shirt.

One of the officers appears to say to him “chill out or I'll choke you out” and then “chill out or you're going to sleep”.

The man was arrested in relation to assault offences and was later released under investigation, West Yorkshire Police said.

The footage was reviewed “as a matter of urgency” and has been referred to the police watchdog, the force said after the footage was shared widely on social media.

We are aware of a video circulating showing the arrest of a man at Spring Hall Gardens, Halifax, on Sunday 16 August in relation to assault offences,” said Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Osman Khan.

“We immediately reviewed the footage and looked into it as a matter of urgency to establish the full circumstances.

“We have reviewed the actions of the officers involved and a referral has been made to the Force’s Professional Standards Directorate.

“Our investigation remains ongoing and we have made a voluntarily referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). The officer involved has been removed from frontline operational duties.

“The man arrested was released under investigation.”

Here we go again, the Police getting stick for doing their thankless jobs.As far as I can work it out,a suspect who has already assaulted another person/people now resists arrest by a policeman.Yet again if the suspect hadn't assaulted anyone in the first place he wouldn't be in a position of being arrested, too many people nowadays think they can go around assaulting/beating/stabbing etc others without any consequences coming back to them.Commit a crime and you deserve all you get,if you don't like that then don't do the crime. At least most of the comments seem to be backing the Police in this instance.

I think that the Police are just out to do their job the best they can, when they try to arrest/talk to/engage with someone they never know how that situation is going to unfold,so have to be prepared for any eventuality that comes their way.I'm sure at the start of each shift they don't set out to deliberately cause controversy.I think it's a sad sign of the times we now live in,that the people who are there to protect the public and uphold the law are put under more scrutiny for their actions than those committing the crimes. I would also assume that the majority of the public back the Police in situations like the one above.Obviously as with all walks of life there are some bad officers but on the whole they do eventually seem to get found out and dealt with where necessary. In my opinion the whole Policing/Judiciary/Criminal system needs overhauling to bring it up to date with today's society with more emphasis on supporting the victims/police/law abiding public rather than the perpetrators.

I fully support the police, and the difficult job they do.
However they seem prone to digging holes with their comments.
These comments only provide assistance for defence solicitors.
A bit like stopping people for unusual driving.
I know they do a thankless job, but they should be more careful.

    It wasnt a trick question.

I just wondered if you meant the copper that is under investigation, or the bloke that was arrested.

Do you think the police have always done this stuff, but have always been able to get away with it in the past, as they back their colleagues, its their word against a criminals, and magistrates always believe the police.

Halifax 'choke' video arrest man Hassan Ahmed feared for life

A man who was filmed apparently being choked by a police officer during an arrest believed he was going to die.

The officer involved has been suspended by West Yorkshire Police pending an investigation

During the video, a voice can be heard saying "chill out or I'll choke you out, chill out or you're going to sleep".

Mr Ahmed is seen tapping on the floor and another voice can be heard saying "I give up" before he is told to "turn over now", with another officer helping to detain him.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) also confirmed the incident had been referred to them.

He said the arrest came after he was called to the area by a family member and got into an argument.

"He did push me as if he were going to arrest me, I complied, I didn't resist him, I complied all the way. I even had my hand by my sides."<blockquote class="Quote"

If he complied then it wouldn't of escalated in to that situation, until the body-cam footage is shown we'll never know what actually happened.

No, but I dont suppose they will release it.

    I am not that interested.

I just think it is yet another silly incident that the police could have avoided, if they were a little more careful.

What should have been a straightforward arrest and an offender punished, has ended up all over the media, protests at the police station, and an officer suspended.

    All over a stupid comment.
