Is poker Gambling?
Is poker a game of skill or luck?

The answer to the first question no matter how many times I have previously stated is it not has to be quite clearly yes, risking money for profit / loss = Gambling.

The second question however has an answer which is a lot more convoluted, Both answers are right. The Skill:Luck ratio depends entirely on what your opinion of it is.

I will be challenging myself to test my understanding of different formats and to see if in the right circumstances i could make a profit in each and not just playing the formats or game types that i'm happiest with. I will be playing other games and only plan on playing a maximum of 2 games (2x spin up or 1x Spin up and 1 'other') whilst the challenge is in progress .

It has been questioned whether the average player could reach the milestone of a small bonus in the recent Cash kings challenge where, going on the numbers for week 1 300 points would be needed for a minimum (£7.50) Bonus.

I plan to play these Over 10 days and set a loss limit of 5 Buy ins (£10) per day. Dipping in and out as required. This may be over 2 or 3 weeks depending on the daily points received.

    Day 1
Playing like more of a maniac that usual.
    2 Tables 50 minutes, 173 Hands, £2.44 loss 7 Points gained

7 points and have to play like that for them, at best thats 5 points a table/hour.

This challenge is no good if you intend on playing spin ups

    Day 2

Just played 1 table at a time whilst dabbling with a couple of plo8 tournaments in 2 sessions. tried be be a little calmer than Day 1.

    1 Table 2 hours 250 Hands £10.65 profit
Not sure on points but some 3 handed will boost these.

The rake is pretty massive in these games at the lower stakes, not sure if any player would be profitable in them!

Good luck with your challenge; maybe try and mix in some 4nl tables.

and the play is crazy, may try 4nl some but wanted the challengers to be outside my comfort zone to see what i can do if i put my mind to it a little more than 6 tabling games of different types and buy in's.

I know 10 days and approx 2000 hands is not a very big sample size but i have to finish it somewhere.

Day 3 looked like a Manhattan sky line.

Then Day 4 Happened - too much aggression maybe.

After Day 4 £0.08 Profit this would count as challenge complete after 10 days.

Hey! Firstly congrats on the success of your previous challenge and your SPT run.

Just a quick question regarding this current challenge, if you don't mind.

How are you keeping track of your progress since on Sky there are no downloadable hand histories etc, and unlike tournaments, manually keeping track of cash/spin up results would almost certainly be impossible [by 'Hands Played' at least]?

Cheers, and good luck for the remaining 6 days.

The way i do it is.
    1. Go to the my sky poker tab and click on hand histories
    2. Click the relevant tabs in the drop down boxes, thse are available for 1 weel after the hands are played.
    3. Copy and paste figures into excel, these are given 10 at a time so the more hands you play the more arduous the task.
    4. Then let excel do the work. Remember these are posted most recent first so if you want a list you will need to filter the date into order

If is was not for the challenge and the extra effect of the graphs i would not be doing it.

Day 5, seems like the swings are quite high

    Challenge to day 5

Profit / loss per hand, is there any learning from this?

    Great!

Thanks for the info. It seems to do the job quite well apart from, as you say, only getting 10 hands at a time.

When I was doing my challenges. I could never think of a decent way to record cash/spin up play, unless it was by session or day. But with your way can now do it by hands played - it even separates different blind levels.

    Good luck at the tables
